How regular is your daily dog routine?

I've met some dog owners with an extremely strict regime for breakfast, walks and dinner - I've also met other owners (and dogs) who are extremely relaxed. I was just curious what your daily routines are, and (if you do stick to a tight schedule) whether your dog notices/minds when things don't go to plan! E.g. if breakfast is an hour late. I understand that most people's routines are based on work - but what about weekends/evenings/holidays?

I don't have a dog at the moment, but will hopefully be adding a rescue to the family in August/September. Our 3 family dogs are used to a very regular routine and they start whining about an hour before breakfast/dinner, and parents always make sure that they're back on the dot for feeding/walks. On the other hand, I regularly dog/house-sit for a family whose retriever is the most relaxed dude on the planet! Happily sleeps in until you wake him up, not too fussed about having his breakfast right away, and picks at his dinner rather than wolfing it down at a certain time. Just wondering how much of this is down to the individual dog, and how much of it is down to the effect of a schedule?

I'm very relaxed with my pup, for I want her to be relaxed, too.
She asks to go out for wees and poos, but for proper walks or games in the park for fetch I decide on. Meals too are relaxed. breakfast is 8-10am, a small lunch (Chicken wing or so) 12-1pm, tea 5-7pm. It's in case of routine change for the OH or I, so she won't be too unsettled.

they get their brekkie at 8.30-9am, a chew around 11am, dinner 4pm (today they had dinner at 3.30pm) then they get a bed time snack or chew at around 8pm, i don't have a regular walkies routine though (dai hates walkies and tends to go on strike a lot, dinky hops like a rabbit, daniel screams at any other dog or cat & lex loves going to the playing fields), bed time is 9-9.30pm then up at 6.30-6.45am

Phew! Glad to hear that there are plenty of you out there with relaxed furry friends. I have been listening to a chorus of hungry dogs for half an hour (feeding time 6pm) - I swear Libby knows how to read the clock! I'm planning on having a more laid back approach with mine as well :)

I'm very relaxed, but mainly because Dan is very difficult if you have a routine and try to change it

We usually get up between 7:30 and 9 am every day, whether or not we walk before breakfast depends on things like if we did a late night walk or if the weathers really bad etc etc. I suppose a good way to describe our day would be meal, walk, meal, walk...etc etc. The dogs get 3-4 walks a day, between 20-90 minutes per walk(obviously not every walk will be 90 minutes).

I think a routine is good for when people work, dogs need some structure in that situation but as i currently don't we don't really need one :)

Altho we have a pattern that we follow, it is not a strict schedule!

As examples - Toppa knows, when I wake up he is taken straight outside to toilet... this could be 7am (school days) one day and 9am (holidays) the next, but he will know because the alarm only sounds on a school day.
Sometimes I make his breakfast before my own... somedays his breakfast is made after mine, but he knows when the grill/kettle goes on... food will follow at some point!
Somedays he walks on the school run both morning and afternoon, other days he doesn't because I have to go to work or going into town, but these are on set days and I think he has gotten used to these days as I tend to give him extra treats, like a frozen kong instead of getting his lead before I head out.

He doesn't seem phased at all by it, but his still a puppy and everything is just great to him right now.....

I try to stick close to the same times for feeding Spen but that's because if I don't he throws up bile. Other than that there's no routine really, he goes out as and when I feel like taking him, training is whenever I feel like doing it, play is whenever I feel like it etc.

No real regime here although Id like to be more organised,if its a work day he gets his breakfast about 7-7.30 and dinner about 4.30.If Im at home its lazy day and breakfast is when he gets it and dinner the same, but he seems perfectly happy with it that way. I decide what time is walkies as this again depends on whether or not Im working. On work days sometimes hubby will take him out for me. Bramble is quite chillaxed even though he's a demon in other ways

I have absoloutly no routine what so ever, she gets up whenever I decide to, will just sleep in until I am ready, she then gets breakfast whenever, usually though I give her it after she has been for a wee sometimes I wait until I'm eating then she gets it, her walk again is just whenever, and dinner can be anytime aswell she dosn't notice if anything is late because there is no set time, I prefer it that way, I'm not a strict schedule kind of person so it suits me for her not to be either. it also means if there is ever a day I am ill or can't walk her she dosn't really notice, or if I have to go somewhere and don't get back till later she won't notice that she hasn't been fed yet.

Monday - Friday due to work there's a routine ie main walks at 6am and 6pm and a special 'snack' as soon as we get through the door from hubby (Cheese or ham )

But in terms of food there's no set times -often some kibble left in the bowl in the morning is still there at 16:00  Millie eats her evening meal after us (She has human food daily and im not going to have cold food due to dishing up hers ;))

We have a very fluid / varying 'routine' and our relaxed approach I think helps Millie cope with that.

I mean she always gets a toilet break once im up but that is 5:40 on a work day yet 9am this morning for example -Millie just goes with the flow ;)

I'm retired so work doesn't force a strict routine these days, but I do loosely keep to some kind of structure/routine during the day as I think it's important with a multidog household.

We're up between 6/7am, they have a biscuit to stop bile and then we're straight out for the first walk. Alfie, Harvey and Blue go together for about an hour, and Jake on his own for half an hour - with Ozzy it depends, sometimes he'll go with the three, sometimes with Jake, and sometimes I take him on his own - darling problem child that he is!

Once an hour has cleared after they've all been exercised, they have breakfast. They have a small snack at midday when I have my lunch.

The second walk varies immensely. In winter we normally head out mid afternoon, but in summer it can be as late as 8 or 9pm. They go in the same 'groups' as the morning walk. Dinner is normally between 5 and 7pm, but it depends completely on when their walk was.

They all go out together for their last walk - just a brisk five minutes for them to go to the toilet. This is just before I go to bed, so can be any time between 10pm and 2am! Upon returning, they get a bedtime biscuit, and settled for the night.

Training sessions, grooming, play etc depends entirely on what I'm up to that day!

we dont have a routine really we get up around 8am or sometimes as late as 11 if i have had a few 12hr shifts on the trot. Cali will be fed around half an hour after i wake up, and walked different times each day.

We don't really have much of a routine, other than making sure the dogs are fed the appropriate number of times a day and that their meals are roughly the same time apart.

We don't like to live to a routine ourselves and so we don't want the dogs to be dependant on a routine that we wouldn't normally stick to.

It works well for us, aside from the puppy needing to go out during the night they'll all pretty much sleep in until we want to get up and are totally chilled our with regards to when they get walk and such like.

The only thing that HAS to be on time is their late night biscuit which Fitz starts demanding at the same time every night

I start with a routine when mine are young so they go to bed at certain time and learn other than quick wee, we don't play out in middle of night etc

When they're very young I usually feed them one meal first thing, (and others later) and we go out at some point before 11am usually on most days. the routine varies depeding on time of year eg snowed in this morning so 4pm before we got out for 1 longer walk instead of 2 walks.

usually as they get older I relax the rules regarding bedtimes etc as long as they are behaving.

no routine, and we don't do mornings in this house either :D

they get walked roughly 6-7am when i get back from work then we all go to bed until the afternoon and they get fed when i feel like it, yesterday it was at 1pm and today 6:30pm (they are fed once a day)

they get another walk later before i go back to work et voila!

My routine is as regular as clockwork. I have to time everything to the minute to fit everything in.

Weekends I can be a little more flexible, but the pets are used their daily routine so the cats will kick-off if I am later than usual. and Duke our dog will grunt and chunter if I am later taking him for his walks.

I like a routine and don't like Kilo going too long in between meals / snacks or he sometimes vomits bile. When I took him to work things were pretty much timed to the minute to fit everything in, but at present they are relaxed.

I am a morning person so roughly:

Any time between 0500 - 0630 up and breakfast.
Walk two hours or so later (sometimes together, sometimes separate). Snack after walk.

Lunch for Rudi / snack for Kilo any time between 1130 and 1330

Separate walks (usually) any time between 1530 and 1830

Dinner any time between 1630 (on a training day) and 2030

Sleep after dinner and 'bedtime biscuit' when I go to bed any time between 2130 and 2330.
