How old is he and what food had he been on?

 

13 weeks and on CSJ Dry

 

i'm just concered the change in diet will upset his tum even more although the canikur is designed to firm him up

 

I can understand the canikur because that stops the diarrhoea. I think my vet would probably have just recommended giving him some fish and rice for a couple of days but perhaps for some reason that would not be appropriate for your pup?

I know some vets do have contracts with various manufacturers and try and encourage use of those products if they can, but it is hard to know when that is being done.

Has he had a tummy upset like this before?

 

vets get commission for pushing that hills rubbish!

if i were you i'd keep him on light easily digested foods like chicken and rice or eggs scrambled without milk i would also give him pro kolin for puppies its excellent for getting the gut back in order

if he dosent improve the vet should investigate further.

 

i told the other half they get commision on it but he is not as strong as i am. i woulnd;t of touched it.....



he;s a 13 week old Bc fully heathy, just found himself a raw bone, while i was in bed (OH let him run around down stairs while i had a lie in)

he had the bone for 4 hours or so....... and was wormed 3 days ago

 

marrow in the bone will give them the runs. I'm not keen on dried food for a puppy as they don't always drink the quantities an adult will so prefer to feed something like Naturediet that you can monitor quantities on.

Having said that I part Barf feed my dogs from pups.

Really sorry to hear your little fella is so poorly. Hope he is feeling a bit better by now. I dont understand why the first suggestion is to change diet when that puts even more strain on their tums???? Heidi has had a poorly tum on and off for the last couple of weeks and each time got worse on the bland diet before she got better.

I rang the nutritionist at Skinners and they advised me the food Heidi is on is targeted at sensitive tums/colitis. Next time moisten it into a porridge and feed it to her like that. It's what I shall be doing in future - why change when she is already on fish and rice:scared::arf:

 

If he's dehydrated, wet food would help, Hills may be better for a small pup than fish/chicken and rice as it probably has more nutrients

 

I remember this stuff. Arnie was so tickle tummied when he was younger, he seems to have outgrown it now tho. I had to go to the emergency vets one weekend (pdsa) and got given a couple of tins of this stuff, the receptionist, bless her, said if his tummy upset continued not to get anymore of the expensive stuff just use chappie chicken and rice.

i would just keep him on the bland easily digested things like boiled chicken or fish and rice or the scrambled egg until he firms up then gradually put him back on his regular food

 

Did they say why they thought he was poorly? has he eaten something he shouldnt have? was he well before the wormer? seems alot of pups are feeling poorly after the wormers these days.
I too would keep him on rice/fish/chicken for a day or two then continue with his regular food.I do get cross when vets tend to push the Hills food(or whichever brand the vet gets commission on) when dogs are poorly,be much better to work around the dogs regular food to prevent further upset.

When Logan was really poorly as a pup he was put on I/D and it was fab and dried him up very quickly! I think it is a very good prescription food even though i don't rate hills diets as a full time food i do like their prescription foods! :thumbup:

 

My pup almost always gets an upset tummy if he gets ahold of something, anything, out of the ordinary. A dead bird or mouse, eating some wild animal's poo, bits of food on the ground. I nearly always catch him before he ingests, but about once a month he's quicker than I. He's runny for a day and then fine.

As a pup, all of his poo was kind of pudding-like until 5 or 6 months. The vet said to cut out all milk as that makes the poo more runny. She said fish and rice were great and easy for him to digest. I read somewhere that Chappie is a good food for settling the tummy, and so sometimes give him that if his tummy is upset. He's right as rain within a day. (I always mix mostly dry, Burns fish & brown rice, with a bit of moist).

I've also noticed that too many treats, either from myself or friends, tend to make things runny.

He may have eaten something you have missed in the garden or something, Pups will eat almost anything if they can chew it. Don’t know if this may help, but I have starved them for 24 hrs, just giving them water and nothing else, then the next day, try dry bread, and then later that day chicken and boiled rice, scrambled eggs, again no milk, for the next day or so, and watch him/her, if there is no improvement, it’s back to the doctor I am afraid for a more in depth investigation. Hope it helps, and hope the little one gets over it very soon.

 

ohhh he's fine now, but he had eaten some horse poo, thanks to the poster of that one

These are the ingredients for Hill i/d
Water, Egg Product, Turkey, Rice, Ground Whole Grain Corn, Pork Liver, Soy Fiber, Dicalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Iodized Salt, Calcium Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Taurine, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Biotin, Riboflavin, Calcium Iodate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Sodium Selenite, Folic Acid.

As you can see. the main ingredients are poultry and rice plus some minerals etc.

Personally, I`d just make my own chicken and rice. I doubt any dog needs all those supplements after a couple of days of loose motions.
