Was doing my shopping in ASDA this morning....

The lady in front of me in the till queque, had lots of luxury goods ie. expensive sherry, sweets, best of human foods.

But then I saw her buy 3 bags of dry 'Smart price' Dog food (the cheapest of the cheap).

Couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor dog. Yes, its a recession but makes me sad when people still buy their '****' and 'booze' but feed their animals rubbish cheap food.

And yes there will be some that say..." Its the only dog food my dog will eat".
Or "Everything else gives my dog the runs".....

IMO excuses, to ease their conscious of their meanness.....

A couple of years back, I was out of work, and times were hard. I would buy the cheap food for myself or STARVE, but my cats still got their James Wellbeloved food and Catsan litter. Personally I woudn't touch the Smart price pet stuff with a barge pole....

My neighbours are the same

Last week she asked if she could borrow ÂŁ10. We was chatting and she said she had run out of dog food so i said oh is that to buy Missy some more food

she said no she is having the cats food this is to buy ****

i couldnt believe it. She has a JRT and she feeds her whatever is on offer and cheaper while they still have their **** and booze

when i get paid the first thing i do is order the dogs and cats food

goes to show how much your pets mean to you :)

ha! you just made me remember we used to play jokes on the cashiers in Tesco, we would put our shopping down which consisted of nappies and a bottle of wine amongst other things, then when we paid for items we'd pretend we didnt have enough money on us and tell the cashier to put the nappies back instead of wine- you should've seen the look on their faces he he!!!

My dog eats cheap food because this is what she likes and what does not upset her stomach. Im not making excuses, I have bought expensive food for her to either have the runs or refuse it!

Also if i remember a while back on a nutritional value thread cheap food wasnt always the worst ;)

imo theres no excuse to use cheap low quality food for your pets when decent completes are also cheap enough these days

Edited to say im not having a pop at you Claire Louise , my post coming right after yours may appear that way ... I spend ÂŁ15 a month feeding my three Border Collies , they are on Skinners field and trial maintenance , get two meals a day and they are thriving on it

Expensive food can work out cheaper anyway because they don't need as much with some brands. The animals always get fed first if we are running low on money.
Couldn't agree more! And yes, the good brands are made up of more and better quality protein , thus pet needs to eat less of it. Also, premium brands are better for their overall health! :D

AND at her last visit to the vet we were told she is perfect weight, her teeth are great and she is in fantastic health.

A cat I got from a rescue had been fed on a cheap brand, but when I got her I changed her onto a premium brand. She did have a slight diarrhoea problem to begin with, but it disappeared after a week or so, as her stomach got used to the better food! :D And she has never looked better, and her health has improved!

Cassie wont touch complete food, have tried alsorts and typical of her breed she is fussy and her stomach is easily upset. I feed her Tesco Tinned meat and if ÂŁ15 a week is cheap I think not LOL

I spend ÂŁ12 for a 15kg bag of complete greyhound food and ÂŁ13.50 for 50, 400g blocks of chicken mince and feed 13 dogs. There is no need to buy the cheapest of pet foods.

I know someone who goes round the butchers in her area and can fill her freezer full of meat and bones for her dogs for a couple of pounds a week.

A tip for anyone who feeds complete is to feed working dog food as it is VAT free.

My OH moans and keeps saying about how much it costs to feed my ogs until I point out he spends more on **** and booze than I do feeding the dogs.

i know someone like that spends ÂŁ3 a week on webbox food and its crap, but it works out ÂŁ4 cheaper as we spend on good food for our two a month!! the difference in coat is amazing

ours costs us just under ÂŁ18 a month but thats inculding ÂŁ7 delivery charge so in theory our food is cheaper and soooo much better

No disrespect to your choice of food! but have you checked the JWB ingredients of late! They were taken over a couple of years back by the mars group I believe!! erm! can't say I am a fan!
lol

Have they changed? I've just put Cheeko back on it because his eyes are a total mess with tearstaining with other food. He's only been on it a few days and his tear staining have dried up so I'm just waiting on the coat to grow to cut it all out. Really hard trying to feed the 2 of them because Royal Canin makes Cheeko ill and JWB makes Blu ill

Ah, yes that wee urban myth... The ingredients have stayed the same! They still manufacture in they same way the always have! So, has sister company RC.

I have posted a while back about this take over, and corrected a few urban myths on it! :D

I tried my lot on Applaws a short while back, but I am back with JWB! ;)

No never tried any other 'good' food apart from JWB. I think for now I will just leave them on the same foods til Blu is a year old then try changing them because I don't want to set Blu's stomach off again. Really set him back on house training and he's only toilet trained now at 5 months after it all.
