Cat Chlamydia in Libby

The vets seem to think Libby ( on top of her other problems ) has Chlamydophila formerly known as chlamydia...

I have asked the vets millions of questions about this SORRY I have also googled! but the censes seems to be it is found in mulit cats or in very young kittens.. Libby is now 27 weeks

Some of you know the conditions which I found Libby in and rescued her from, could she have had this condition ALL along??? she has had endless courses of anitbiotics and eye ointment in her little life to date... would not the medication have stopped this???

I am a bit confused..........

also any tips to prevent this apart from anitbiotics?

hiya,

not know really that much about it, other than when we originally went to pick up lilly from the cp, there was a lovely young cat there who unfortunately suffered with this, one of the things that they mentioned that if a cat has this but is showing "clear", something as simple as stress can bring it on.

Probably not what you wanted to hear with everything that happened with libby in her young life, but didnt want to read and run, and hopefully someone else more knowledgeable will pop along soon

Clare x

have you posted in health you may get more responses in there x

It can be an absolute pain to clear up. My last two NFC kitttens went down with it a week after coming to us. We then had a merry go round of antibiotics and ointment for weeks at a time before we finally cleared it, as the other two NFC then got it. One cat would be clear, only for another to get it, only to go onto another, and then back to the first! most of the cats had several long courses of ronaxan and fucilthalmic

good luck!

Thank you all once again,

Yes Cazzer Libby is on ronaxon and fucilthalic again!!! she must be so sick of me plonking cold ointment in her eyes day in day out.which is a battle. then the daily antibiotics which she now just opens her mouth and swallows.. no fighting... just part of her daily routine which is sad.

paddypaws is going to kindly send me some of this Agaricus. Hopefully I will get on top of this... thank goodness my other cat Loulou has never caught anything off Libby............. her immune system is strong.. along with her waist line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will keep you all posted on this, as it does seem to be a grey area...which may help someone elses furbaby out in the future.

When I first got Bibi from CP, my vet checked her eyes (they were awful) and thought she had chlamydia, and treated her as if she had it. Her eyes cleared in a week, and we carried on the ABs and ointment - but I had a sort of tube of greasy paste that was very easy to administer. If I find a vet bill I'll try and see what it was.

Even after a traumatic time, she hasnt had a relapse.

I hope you get good results

(not you the people you got her from!) Im guessing that mum got out and mated some cats? shes wasnt the product of a pedigree / supervised health tested mating? :(

so basically sounds like (like humans) from having sex with all the cats possibly passed it around :( then it passes onto the kittens from birth, so lovely letting your cats out to have sex! Obviously they are always so healthy! :incazzato:

She must be kept as a indoor cat, obviously neutered, stress can trigger illness like eye infections - quite bads ones from what I remember :( keep her away from other cats sharing food bowls/water, there is a product that you could use called (ill pm you) that may help cure it, we used to use it when I fostered.

Remember that it can be passed to humans so be Very clean, anti bac dont touch your eyes etc if she is ill.
also just because your other cat hasnt Shown symtpms sadly this doesnt mean that she doesnt have it :( If your other cat get stressed, it may come out then, you can have a swab done at the vets & send it off (about ÂŁ50) to see if she has it now.

poor baby *big hugs* to her & you.

There's been big talk of this recently on an email list I'm part of, as someone had it in their household.

This lady's cats were treated with a month long course of Ronaxan. I'm sorry, but you need to treat all the cats. This disease passes through close contact, and even if your other cat isn't showing symptoms, she may well have it. If you don't treat her too, you'll probably find that you'll go round in circles with one cat reinfecting the other all the time. The whole household needs to be treated.

Wow. where would I be with out all your help..:yesnod:

Ella/Bibi great to hear off you, Bibi has been on my mind ever since the drama of getting out of the cat flap... and home again.. I hope she is settled once more. xx

I am off to the vets soon and I will voice my concerns after all your advice... I am worried now about my other cat Loulou.... I will have her tested for sure... I had Loulou tested for FIV when we thought Libby had it, thankfully both are clear.

Poor little Libby as you know was found by myself in such awful conditions... I originally went about ducks and came back with her... she was on deaths door and has been in the vets almost every other week since... she so does not deserve all this ill health as she has to be the most affectionate little kitten I have ever come across... she is a spoilt baby for sure however she does derserve such pampering... I have no intentions of letting her out.. she is too gentle therefore would not be able to cope with the big harsh wild world. Our home is plenty big enough and she has more toys than "toys r us" so I will never feel guilty in keep her indoors.

I really do thank you all for taking the time to PM or post in answer to my thread, I am very grateful.

I will up-date you with the next visit to the vets.

Between us all we will crack Libby's poor health...

Hiya

I am just doing some paperwork shredding (oh I love doing it:D) and found the receipt for when Bibi was treated for her eyes.

She was on Ronaxan tablets and Aureomycin Eye Ointment. The eye ointment was great (and seems a bargain at ÂŁ5.51!) - stayed in the eye well and fairly easy to administer - I put a tiny amount on a clean finger and gently wiped it into her eye, it's sort of greasy - a bit like oil paint consistency

Hope this helps

Thank you Ella, I will make a note of that ointment, Libby has changed eye ointment again after taking her to the vets and already her eyes are clearing up, the vets will monitor this and should she have another infection we will test her for ...chlamydia, if she does have this then my other cat Loulou will be tested also. If not then it is just the old cat flu returning...
thanks again

Happy shredding:wink:
