Just wondered whether anyone shared my views on this?

Do you think kids should have their ears pierced? Should it be different for say, 10 year olds, 4 year olds, babies?

I know what I think, but wanna know if I over reacted to a situation first.....

Discuss :D

My auntie took me out when I was 4 years old - I came home with pierced ears and a 'purdy cut' (I did beg and beg for them) - previously having waist length hair - my mum went mad!! Obviously this was 20 years ago (oh alright, the purdy cut gave it away - 35 yrs ago  )

I wouldnt let my son have his ear pierced til he was 13 and I would have been the same with a daughter.

I dont like seeing piercings on young children - at 13 they may not know whats best for them, but IMO, thats the time to let them start making decisions, and mistakes, of their own.

I allowed my eldest Daughter to have hers done when she was 13, but my 13 yr old daughter had hers done at 11 because her father and his then irritating teen girlfriend did it behind my back....my language as a result can not be posted on the forum. I have ages for certain piercings...13 for the ears 16 for anything else like belly button etc...the only reason I allowed my son to get his snake bites at 16 is because they are legally allowed to have the done with ID at 16 so if i hadn't have taken him for them god knows where he would have gone and how clean it might or might not have been, and with it being in the mouth I wanted to know it was done properly, still really cringe when i see them though lol....any other piercings or tattoos can wait till 18 when i have no control over it

See, my OH's Auntie let her little girl have her ears pierced at 4 years old. Granted, she did want them done, but i don't think at 4 you really understand how it hurts and needs looking after etc etc

So she screamed having them done. She then screamed having them cleaned, and wouldn't let her mum anywhere near her ears. She was really crying and shaking, she was so scared, poor little mite.

Then, today, guess what? ears are infected. So they had to nigh on pin her down to get them out.

All very dramatic for her and I just don't see why you would put your children through something like that at such a young age.

Even worse my OH's sister had her little girls ear pierced at 10 months  she didnt want them done, so why do it? why cause pain to a baby when it isnt needed? whyyyyyyyy? :mad5: I would also be so worried about a little one like that catching them and pulling them out.

So, yeah, i fell out with the auntie today a little bit. woops. xx

Yep my son had his snake bites done and his septum pierced when he was 16 (I allowed it for the same reasons as you) - when he was 16 he also had his other ear done, and has since stretched them, and has 3 tattoos - he is now 19.

His first tat is on his calf, and is 3 daffodils (my fave flowers) and a scroll going through them, with my name and DOB on it - when I asked him why he said 'well if my first was a tribute to you, you couldnt complain'

I agree with you. My auntie shouldnt have got mine done when I was 4, however much I begged, and I totally understand why my mum went mad - it took them half an hr after the first ear before they could manage to do the second ear - I remember it! Luckily mine didnt get infected!

And no way would I ever get a babys ears pierced.

I don't think parents should let their kids have them pierced til at least 15. Mm took me for mine when I was young can't remember how old I was but I cried when they as I put it shot my ear with the gun took 2 weeks. To get the other done then my swimming teacher made me take them out. Never going through that again.

I had mine done as a baby and am glad I did as it didn't hurt me at all then. I didn't cry, If I was older I would have been more aware of it. I don't see the problem with pierced ears and don't understand why some parents won't let their child have them until they are a teenager.
Thats my personal opinion though, I don't expect anyone to agree with me.

i HATE seeing little babies with thier ears done, its just wrong imo to do that to a baby or a young child, thats what the sticky on earrings are for.

not sure what age should be for getting them, it really depends on the individual child but i personally dont think any younger than 10

#13 ·
I got my youngest daughters done on her last birthday which was here twelth birthday, unfortunately after she was able to take out the studs she had issues getting her earrings in by herself and her ears closed, I really think it depends on how responsible your child is and how available you are as a parent to help your child

Well I let my daughter get her's done when she was six. I wish I hadn't have done it as due to issues, well accidents with the earrings really, she had to get them re-pierced twice. The last time when she was seven or eight and I can't ask her because she's sleeping, but she'd probably have it down to the day! But I did tell her that if something went wrong again she'd be waiting till 13 to retry!

It's a cultural acceptance for girls to have their ears pierced at young ages, it's not the same for boys. I'm sure if our son (9) asked for it we'd make him wait. But pierced ears for girls is so common. Another 'alive and well' stereotype.

I HAVE told my daughter that I will not give permission for a belly button piercing before age sixteen and that I will NEVER give permission for any kind of facial/other body area piercings or any tatoos. If she wants to mar her body for life then it's her choice, but one that she will only make as an adult. And a choice that she hopefully doesn't make until she's very sure and comfortable about the skin she lives in.

That is so sweet, My Mums fave flowers where Daffodils too, must be Mum thing becaue each spring when I see the first daffs I always take a minute or to to remember my Mum:)I can imagine you couldn't have complained if you'd wanted to though as it really was a sweet thing for him to have done bless him
Matts next one is his septum, and for that one I will cringe lol...I'm still clutching on to the legal thing where a Tattoo is concerned and telling him he's too young, he asks me how old I was when I had mine and I have to admit to lying out of my back teeth or I wouldn't have a leg to stand on, I was under age when I had mine but years ago laws weren't enforced as much in tattoo studios as they are now. I do think once they reach 16 that the choice is theirs to make though even if I don't particularly like what he wants piercing or inking up

I had my first earpiecing when I was 11 my second at 26 and my 3rd at 30,odd..
My choice.. I went alone got it done and told mum when I got home..

My daughter begged for pierced ears and I allowed it when she was 6 ..But I knew she wasnt the sort of child to fiddle with them and she understood the care required..
When she was 13 and I was 30+ I had my 3rd and she her second done at the same time..
I also took her to have her bellybutton pierced at 15 to a man who was absolutly the cleanest around (he's a paramedic turned piercing/tattoo studio).

Re ears..I think it really is an individual choice and every child/situation is different..Body piercings then yes over 16 is a good idea..

All 3 of my girls had their ears pierced when they were a year old, if piercing wasnt such a rage back then, then I wouldnt of had theirs done, at least having them done at an early age they forget about them being in their ears and dont play with them as much. But I would think some people would class it as abuse now days. My girls are sooo glad I had theirs done when they were small, as two of them have needle phobia's and would never of gone and had them done BUT wanted to have them done. I think if today I would wait until the child is old enough to ask to have them done, it would be their choice.

My girls had to wait until they had finished junior school.
Mainly because at infants/juniors they have to take their earings out for PE etc and I thought it would be to much hassle for them.
They had them done the day they broke up for summer so had the 6 weeks summer holidays for the holes to be healed so when they went back to school thay had no hassle.

Personally I don't like to see babies and young children with their ears peirced.

On another note because there are no laws around minimum age for peircings my cousin went out with her friends age 11 and with out the permission from their parents had their tummy's pierced

#21 · (Edited)
i didn't have mine done till i was 13 and that had to be done in 6 weeks school holidays, and that was only after i begged and pleaded with my mum.

and at 15 i went out and got 3 facial piercings, belly, nipple and wrist done (not at the same time obviously) my mum used to say she was terrified when i went out for what id come back with :D

i really do not approve of little babies/toddlers having theirs done, they didn't ask to have it done, the parents did it to make them look cute, like they need jewelery in their ears to look cute

Just my opinion :)

Most schools, sports clubs etc. require piercings to be removed so it`s pretty pointless anyway.
I`m not going to say what I think of the practice because last time I did, I got a load of abuse.
I get why they require piercings to be removed for sports, especially in school because it can get rough and when hey have piercings especially in their faces. What annoyed me with Matthews school is that when he has his snake bites he only had 3 months to go before he left and there was one teacher who just didn't like piercings so she refused to even allow him to watch the pe session, that kind of smacks on unfair really, because she didn't like them my 16 yr old was wrong for getting them, sod the fact that he is old enough to make the decision for himself and has a right to wear what he chooses even with jewellery, so for health and safety reasons I totally agree but for the reason that the teacher just doesn't like them is out of order.

I can never understand how parents cant smack their children to bring them in line yet are allowed to let someone drill holes in their ears in the name of fashion.
lol that's where I went wrong....all the talking and reasoning I've done with my lot when all I had to do was say ''if you don't behave you'll get your ears pierced''
