Tortoiseshells?

I was just wondering what personal experiences people had with tortoiseshells. I have heard they are meant to be "temperamental" and wonder if you have found this to be true?

I have a 10 yr old tortoiseshell myself, and she has never been an aggressive or vicious cat. Well, until the kitten came alone anyway! She is very affectionate and doesn't mind being fussed a lot. Doesn't mind her belly being rubbed etc. She is also the most vocal cat I've ever owned. She will meow constantly if you talk to her at all, or if she wants feeding/to go out. But generally she just talks a lot!!

Would be interested to hear your experiences! :D

EDIT: I also read that tortoiseshells with white on them are generally "friendlier" than brindle type tortoiseshells....?

I had a tortie and white (calico) she was an angel. The softest, nicest natured cat I have ever met. She was found as a stray with her front leg broken. She had plastercasts removed and replaced without the use of sedation ,she was insulin dependant diabetic for the last 7 years of her life .I injected her daily.got urine samples all without so much as a twist of her beautiful face. She didnt have a nasty bone in her body.

Our tortie Mia is in my avatar.

She's 18m old and still acts very kittenlike, and is happy to be the baby, made a fuss of etc. She has very expressive eyes which are always wide open - sometimes i think she looks more like a puppy than a cat!

She's not naughty at all - her (black) mum is though - I think Mia is too stupid to be naughty! She tries to be adventurous but usually falls or rolls off things, or misjudges distances when jumping. or just sits there meowing until one of us comes to help her down off the fence, or the shed roof... I thank my stars that she usually falls out of a tree before she gets high enough to panic and get stuck! Her mum is so adventurous and intelligent, I think her dad must have been a total muppet to make Mia so dim (thats assuming Lila is her mum, they came from Battersea as strays, so can't be sure...). She can get very overexcited sometimes and rush round the house like a mad thing though, most evenings...

She loves running water and if she hears someone weeing, she rushes from whatever she is doing to watch them. If its DH she puts paws up on the toilet seat watching, sometimes she jumps on the seat and yes she has been peed on several times... never learns though!

I think torties aren't necessarily naughty - but they do often have a pretty unique personality! I have only met a few though other than ours.

Feel like I should show a few pics of our sweetie pie - anyone else got any to share? torties are so pretty, never see the same markings twice!
(1) At battersea the day we met them. (2) Discovering her "time out" zone under the sofa - she takes herself under there when she gets really overexcited! (3) Mia the other week, looking uncharacteristically serious. Also quite chubby from a week at the cattery!

We have had our little tortie now for exactly a week. Well to be precise a week at 6pm tonight! :)

I cant really comment much on what she will be like in years to come obviously, this is my first tortoiseshell.

In the last week though she has just been the loveliest. She is always looking for hugs and snuggles. She is always sitting on my laptop and wants to know what me or my partner are doing. She is currently curled up in my arm like a little baby, so i have to type with one hand!

She is very playful with lots of energy and overall - so far - very lovely.

I have just been looking at what their attitude and personality is supposed to be like - but personally i cant see Cookie being like that when she is older!

:)

Cookie is so cute! Bless! I love the little sandy patch on her chin! And big brown eyes like Mia.
peecee - thanks very much, we do love her! (less so as she's just started her mad half hour and dashed in from the garden and across my shiny laptop with wet muddy paws...)
Buffie - she is a very handsome cat - looks quite satisfied with her lot in life!!

I have 3 torties, and they all have tortitude in one form or another! By that i dont mean agressive just their own general attitude and personality quirks!

Sheba (lilac tortie) is the queen bee of the house and everyone has to bow to her commands ;). loves loves loves people and cuddles, but takes the longest to accept newcomers.

Colin... not so much of a fan of adults but lurves kids! pees and poos in the toilet not in a tray! also sleeps in sinks!

Rose.... well a bit different because she is special needs.

I currently have a foster too who is a tortie. She is turning out to be just as affectionate and quirky lol!

Beautiful pictures everyone, I don't have any on my computer of the two we had when I was younger, Paleface was tortie and with white and half her face was white and she was born on the farm where we lived and I said look at the cat with the pale face and that was her name from then on in, we had her from when I was three until I was 16 and she was a fiesty but loving with it, I would push her about for hours in my dolls' pram, she was a demon hunter though still catching things up until she was pts, she even caught an adder one day and just sat on it looking all proud how she didn't get bitten goodness knows.

The other was an evil cat called Pippin who only tolerated humans as long as they fed her but she would cuddle up against you under the duvet as long as you didn't touch her or stroke her but she would lick any exposed flesh especially the back of your legs, being woken up like this at three in the morning was never fun. She too was demon hunter and would bring live prey in in the winter to amuse herself with on cold wet windy days.

I was about to post about my tortie, but reading through the posts so far I've realised that she's actually a calico. Might have to change her name from Shelly now!

She's half tortie and half white, and is very affectionate. Whenever anyone new comes into the house she's straight over to investigate and look for some attention. She's also a little bit scatty and clumsy, which can be quite funny :)

Our tortie Mindy has her moments...

She can be really nice and affectionate then 10 mins later be sitting giving you a dirty look or growling at you. She thinks she rules the house, and probably does.

She is 12 now and runs about like a kitten..hunts every night (chased a squirrel yesterday)..fights with our other cat, all the cats in the street..and swipes at the dog!

Her litter mates are all still alive and her mum died when she was 22 so looks like we are stuck with her and her moods for a while! She is v pretty though!

She has 'tortietude' in bucketloads!

Well, I've always known 'tortis' to be mingled/patchy + white. I thought that 'calico' was the name Americans use for our (UK) torti.

I've got one without white, and when anyone asked me what colour she was, I'd never know quite how to describe it, so would usually say "Like a torti without any white"

Some years ago, I helped out at a rescue centre, and they told me that the mingled/patchy without white, were called Kalamanka :)

My Daisy is the sweetest cat you'd ever want to meet until you hold/restrict her free movement. Then, she just panics and loses alll sense of reason....Screeching, growling, spitting...And although she's only a small cat, she's as strong as an ox when she's in that frame of mind. Anyone could sit with her on their knee all day and stroke her (even complete strangers) and I'd be 100% sure that she'd never even think of lashing out, growling, or anything. She loves attention. It's only when she's restricted that she flips her lid.
She was the only kitten born and was apparently, pinned down a lot by the agresive male cat they had. This was the reason the owner needed to find her a home, because she was worried about her safety. I think these first experiences are what's caused this behaviour, because she's such a pleasure the rest of the time :)

finally not forgetting the pointed torties! Those with the pointing gene!

To confuse matters, what one breed calls them, another does not, what is common in one country is not in another etc.

However... they are all torties of one sort or another!

hope that helps x

Our calico (I think?!) Amber is an adorable little thing, but has quite a strong personality!

She will not let you do anything to her she doesn't want done (e.g. wiping her runny eyes, worming, picking her up to put her in the living room at bedtime) but she just loves cuddles and strokes - on her terms - and will often roll over to have her beautifully soft ginger and white belly rubbed.

She *loves* the shower, and will often wait for someone to come into view and then very determindly march them over the shower in the bathroom, checking every few steps that they are following her and not having the nerve to ignore her!

She's unique, but we love her to bits and wouldn't change her for the world. Obviously :D

we had a tortie, Rosie, who was a very fluffy brown and sand coloured girly.

she had a beautiful nature, very affectionate, very vocal, and was never in the slightest bit naughty/agressive/tempremental.

i miss Rosie Fluff :(

I've got three torties (see below) each has a different personality, One is a total lap cat, one is only interested in me when she wants to suck my fingers when I'm trying to sleep, the third is in the middle (one with most white). I wouldn't say any of them are particularly naughty cats but everyone thinks they are all 'very precious' although that may be more my fault for spoiling them rather than a tortie thing
