Those without big backyards - how often do you skip "proper" walks?

So today is the first day it's pelted with rain constantly (so far), I hate the rain and the pup isn't keen either. I've taken her out for wee breaks on the lead, with lots of coaxing, but as soon as i headed for "out" she planted all four and refused to move :biggrin5:

So this might be our first day without a proper walk ever, since she had her jabs. I've done 2 x half hour play and training sessions with her inside, and she's now dozing.

I tend to assume that the dog will pretty much combust and / or turn into the devil incarnate without her outside hour, but my other half says that not everyone walks their dog every day. Is that true? How many of you skip anything more than pee breaks once in a while, and if so how often? Doesn't count if you have a big backyard you can tip them out to hoon around in...

Jacks the opposite. Can't get him to go out in the garden usually if it's raining, but if I rattle his lead he is raring to go!

It won't do any harm to miss a walk - provided they have toileted - so just chill and have a day off. I also think you can make a rod for your own back if you are too rigid in your routine anyway. ;)

Our garden is about an acre but it's never used as a subsitute for walks. The only time they will miss a walk is if they're ill or injured, all other times we'll head out as usual.

I have waterproofs, wimpy dog has waterproofs, the rest are dried on return - personally don't see rain as a reason to skip walks - we'd never get out very much if we did that!

On days like this, Oscar literally won't step outdoors unless he's bursting for a wee, and even then, it's brief.
Having said that, he's a very mellow 4 year old shih tzu, so missing a 'proper' walk every now and then really is no biggie, as he's still happy to whiz around the block for 10 mins, do his business and head back indoors where it's nice and dry (he generally won't do his business in the tiny back yard unless he's ill)

I wouldn't keep a dog in constantly in bad weather though, because this could carry on for weeks! I'd whack a waterproof coat on her, drive her to the park and shelter under the trees, try and get her to play ball or at least have a mooch around for a while. After all, she's got to get used to it to an extent!

We haven't missed a walk yet, Daisy doesn't mind the rain and howling wind (even though I do!) so I don't feel I can justify not taking her out! If she didn't want to budge though I might be persuaded to stay home with a cuppa! :D Especially today as it's berluddy awful weather here, but off we went out, we both got soaked and Daisy had to be hair dryed when we got in cos she was soaked to the bone. She's now asleep by the radiator :D

I wouldn't have thought the odd day off matters much, it depends very much on your dog though I think, Daisy would prob be quite hard to handle in the house if she didnt get her half an hour offlead messabout, and wouldn't settle as well for the two hours a day she has to be left alone.

Wouldn't skip a walk due to weather- illness/injury is different.

My garden is never used as substitute either- since we had a flat when we first got him , the garden is a bonus!

He did NOT like rain/ traffic noise in the rain when we first got him- just build up their confidence, before you know it no one will mind...

Honestly I love walks in the rain- cause all the wimps stay home and I have the best dog walking places to myself:D

Mine gets walked everyday. He won't toilet in the garden as I currently have patio. The garden isn't big enough I believe for him to have proper exercise. Today in the heavy rain he wasn't to keen but went out eventually. Under extreme difficult circumstances such as bad ice on the ground and me being nervous of it he gets a lot shorter walks to the nearest piece of grass for him to toilet/have a run about then home but otherwise we go out everyday. I don't think a dog will suffer if not walked for a day, I.e toilet breaks and stimulation indoors, and wouldn't force my dog out for a walk if for some reason he really didn't want to!

Mine go out unless ill or injured. They hate going into the garden to toilet in the rain but will go for walks no dramas - they have to be OK with walking in the rain living in Norn Iron. Despite what they would like me to believe they are waterproof :D.

This is one good thing, we never see ANYONE when it's raining! So I can chuck her ball for miles and not have to worry about bonking someone on the head :D Also I can play stupid games with her where I hide in the trees and in the grass and no one is there to see it

Our lot absolutely detest the rain so when it's really bad we don't bother taking them out. There seems no point to me in forcing them to go out on a walk they won't enjoy, especially as they won't run around in it. All they do in heavy rain is mope along until we go home which does less to burn off energy than a few good training sessions at home would.

We also have to occasionally miss a walk for various reasons so it's beneficial all round if they can cope when that happens.

I'm the same, today's drowned rat look is proof of that.

I'm happy to walk mine in the rain, even if Molly is a little more subdued (not really the right word) than usual!

It normally means there are less idiots around (not that I see many anyway) which is an advantage.

It doesn't matter too much with Pippa if she misses walks, for example, she doesn't go out for 3/4 weeks in her seasons and she doesn't behave any differently. Molly on the other hand... I'm really not looking forward to her season!

If my dog *really* didn't like the rain and were stessed by it, then I wouldn't force them out.

I don't have a garden but even if I did she would still get her walks every day. Rain doesn't bother either of us we're out in all weathers. :D Only time she ever gets less is some weekends when me and OH are reeeally busy then we just take her out for half hour or so and another quick walk in the evening. Doesn't seem to bother her at all.

Not that often though they do skip some. My guys aren't keen on wet walks even with coats on,they go to loo in garden & dash back in too. Throp generally won't budge from driveway if its raining heavily so I end up leaving him behind, we walk for their benefit so dragging him up road seems pointless to me.When it was snowing I struggled to walk them as the street was like walking on an ice rink as the cars compacted it, which with 2 high prey dogs is accident waiting to happen given all cats locally.

Me and Holly love wet walks. Less dogs about which means more off lead time for Holly. We went out after lunch today for an hours walk, she had great fun running after her ball and playing in a big puddle. The men in the van opened the door to tell me it was lovely weather, and I was thinking it is raining that hard!.
I don't have a big garden but Holly still plays out in it once a day, depends on the weather!. I must admit sometimes we play in the garden and instead she just gets one big walk. Holly isn't worried as long as she gets to play ball she is happy.

I would rather walk in the rain, then in boiling hot weather.

Only time Holly misses walks is if she is ill, or I am really ill.

Hmm the important part here is force- you shouldn't force a dog to do anything, but if you live in a country with high precipitation levels personally I would work on that until the dog is over the fear of it- or invest in a jacket etc so dog is more comfortable if it's not fear.

Like I said mine was really, really reluctant AND scared of traffic/splashing noises- he'd even run round puddles rather than through them.

If I never walked him in the rain- he'd barely get walked!! Scotland's not known for it's sunshine:D

After a few months he was a different dog. He'll go out in any weather for a walk, we moved now so he doesn't encounter so much traffic/rain noise but with the same reassurance/exercises at busy roads in rain, he soon settles and remembers nothing to fear- oh- now he runs through puddles like there was no stopping him :)

I dont walk mine in bad weather coz they really, really hate it. Nothing more depressing then dragging a group of tiny dogs down the road with their tails between their legs. The Chi's both shake and Heidi will actually cry if it rains heavily on her!
Luckily I live in quite a dry part of the country so its rare that the weather will be bad all day, and I have time to wait it out!
I often dont walk them if Im working my nightshifts though. Ive found that taking them out makes them all hyper and they dont settle whereas if I just let them into the garden instead they will be much calmer and I can get some sleep!:)

Honestly because of my work schedule, proper walks are usually only on fri-sun but some of the time Brody gets to come to work with me so if I get up at a good time we walk to my second bus stop, instead of catching it closest to me which is about a 20 minute walk across the park.

Chula is the same except she goes to daycare almost every day with my husband.

(we work different jobs)

I would never skip walks because of the weather, suspect ninja might although she is happy enough once she gets out, she is an odd terrier, not keen on water at all, I had to walk half way back up the beach the other night as she wouldnt wade across 6ft of puddle  and if we are in the estate she will try and walk under the hedgerows etc  she also doesnt like the sounds of the rain, the noisy cars etc but I dont let that stop us. Mainly for the delicious reason everyone has said that thats one of the few times I can take advantage of the lovely walks close to home as theres no other bugger put there :D

If she was really miserable then I really wouldn't worry about the odd missed walk though. We do get ourselves in a tizz about having to 'walk' but training indoors is as good and we did do just that as part of our calming programme.

When we had Rory there were some days he didn't get any walk at all simply because we couldn't be bothered , we didnt even do anything else with him, no training, no play :( but he was fine with that. I wouldn't be able to try that experiment with ninja I dont think :p

We have a large garden (over 3 quaters of an acre) but my dogs still get walked for a solid hour everyday, without fail. I would never skip walks because of the weather. They can be a bit funny about the rain, especially when they were younger, but I just make them go :) . They usally enjoy it when they get out.
