I don't know much but is it any different to calves or lambs being killed and eaten?
Many countries eat meat from animals that we regard as pets not food.

 

It seems awful to us in the UK as it doesn't happen here.

In Spain and other European countries its the norm.

I'm sure some countries would be disgusted to know we kill lambs or calfs to eat.

I don't like the idea myself, but its what is considered ok in the country you live.

As long as it's had a good life, I'd have no issue with eating horse meat.

However, I agree it's culturally shocking.... Just like Asian cultures eating cat or dog.

I had a lovely free range chicken tonight (despite having hens as pets) it was probably about 8 weeks old when slaughtered and I have no qualms about buying new season lamb from my local farmer, even though the lambs aren't 6 months old when slaughtered.

Depends where you buy your meat, you may already have eaten a fair bit of horse, without knowing it.

 

I live in Spain and see horse meat everytime I go in the supermarket... ''Potro'' as it would of been called as that is the translation for foal, does not mean it was a little cute small foal as we know them, but an older animal, often under 18 months old, much the same as beef really.

I dont buy it (its not cheap, its the same price as beef) on the packets I see it does state the animal was raised and slaughtered in Spain..

 

It would be hypocritical of me and many others to moan about this as lambs, calves, chickens etc are all killed young in the UK so what is the difference? I'd never want to eat horse but I have no problem people eating it as long as they're travelled and killed humanly, same as I feel with other animals.

I don't eat lamb or beef but I do eat chicken.

Because Horses are sweet and lovely and we domesticate them? Load of tosh. The animal is being killed regardless. A lamb being slaughtered is no different to a horse being killed or even a Cat and Dog. It really isn't. Animals are animals and it's only because it is the norm to eat such things as cow, sheep, chicken that the rest makes us outraged.

No, I would never eat Cat or Dog if given the chance. I wouldn't and that's because it would be like eating my cats who I love dearly.

It is still the same, to me, though as killing any other animal for food.

As for horse? Yes, I would probably try it if given the chance.

I get your point. I personally couldn't ever eat a cat or dog and I can readily admit that. But I do still see it as no different to slaughtering a chicken or a cow, etc. The animal is still dying in pain, isn't it.

And to be fair, the people in China do need to make a living. I have seen what it looks like with people selling dogs as food in China. The heads are on hooks for all to see. I couldn't no, but they need to eat themselves and provide for themselves and family. Sad really.

I believe it is strays they take from the streets but don't quote me on that. I'd be concerned with getting severely ill from it than anything else.

 

If people didn't want to eat a horse by going off say their intelligence etc... then think about pigs! Such an intelligent animal and other countries would be disgusted that we eat them. As I say, I don't care if other countries eat horse, dog etc as long as they're humanly treated and killed.

 

I also don't see the logic in it, if your going to eat one animal you should be willing to eat them all, there is no difference between slaughtering a foal for dinner than slaughtering a lamb chances are a lot of people have eaten horse already even if they didn't mean to

 

Don't think horses are madly intelligent, mine can be plain stupid some days, he spooked at me yesterday, what an idiot!

There's not much cuter than a new born calf all legs and no balance, but many male calves are culled at birth because who needs bulls roaming round the place? Increasingly, rose veal is being produced from this so they have a purpose other than just getting the dam to produce milk.

I'm all for horse meat, as long as it's humanely produced and it's no different to eating beef, lamb etc. not sure I'd want to eat it, but hey, it's all meat.

 

Agree with not being hypocritical if we eat other meat, young animals.

I have eaten horse in Malta a few times, it was delicious.

I used to be a vegetarian but now eat meat, however I like to be conscious of where it comes from and the conditions it has been reared and slaughtered in.

I only buy meat from my local butcher, locally bred and killed.
I couldnt eat dog or cat whatever, i just know, and i know the people in china are poor who eat cats and dogs, but its also the way they kill them inhumanely, skinned or boiled alive,cant bear thinking about it
