Hi me again (sorry).
Currently feeding beta purina large breed puppy food this is what he was on when we got him so we have just carried on with it. Very confused as some people are saying its rubbish some say its great .
Problems we have with it
1) wind that stinks to the high heavens to the point we had to open the window one night.

2) very loose soft stools.

He seems happy on it but wondering if theres a better feed to use .:confused1:
Btw hes a 13 week old black lab

My top favourites

Millies Wolfheart - Very good sized kibble suitale for small breeds and the big ones. Excellent customer service and knowladgale friendly staff. They also have a facebook page so you can get to know the creators.
Highly reasonable prices and also a great selection of natural and suitable K9 treats which have provern to be very popular to even the most fussy eaters.

Simpsons - Reasonable price good ingrediants however if you have a small dog I would recomend getting a sample bag first as some smaller dogs can choke on smaller sized kibbles. Also a good selection of flavours

Taste of the wild - I just bought my first bag on special offer. Again I would recomend getting a sample bag the kibble sizes are slightly larger then Simpsons but much flatter but could also cause choking. Excellent ingrediants and you get slightly more in the bag and a more unique selection of ingrediants. This product can be pricey. My advice would be to shop around. I got a very good deal on Amazon.

All ways introduce new Dry food (also known as Kibble) as a treat and never straight in the bowl if you find your dog chokes on kibble try and find a larger pellet size or just feed wet or raw((Raw does require quite some research).

As has been mentioned, check out the dry food index - it's a great place to start as you can see what'll fit your budget.

I am another user who would recommend Millies Wolfheart. It's a great food, and the price isn't too bad due to the pretty low feeding amounts :)

By comparison to some vet recomended propducts the price isn't too bad at all I also think they have more selection in bag sizes.

I have 2 cavalier KC Spaniels they are both fed the same food Iams light for neutered dogs with a small topping of JWB wet pouches. My oldest one is always letting off and what a horrible smell. It permeates the room. The younger one (18 months) eats exactly the same but she is fine. I told the vet,but he just said some dogs are more prone to this than others ,and if she wasn't off her food etc it was probably just one of those things. Can anyone suggest what could be causing this,as it seems to me that there is either something in the food,or something in her gut.

Not sure if its this one Large breed with turkey?

If so ingrediants are:-

Composition: Cereals (wholegrain 20%), Meat and animal derivatives (meat 14%, turkey 4%), Vegetable protein extracts, Oils and fats, Derivatives of vegetable origin (dried beet pulp 1.1%), Vegetables (dried chicory root 1.1%), Minerals.

Although not all the percentages are given they have to list whats most in it first and Cereals is the main ingredient, although they say 20% is wholegrains they don't say what the rest are. Meat and animal derivatives can mean any meat or parts the named meat turkey is only 4% the other unnamed meat is only 14% which means you have a total meat content of only 18% most of which you don't know what it is. Vegetable protein extracts and derivatives of vegetable origin can mean anything as regards to what vegetables.
As its high cereal content and pretty low meat content then its deffinately doesn't look like the best food going. Now sure how much it is but its likely you could get a lot better for your money.

If he is passing stinking wind every time he eats it that's as bad as you say and stools are loose or sloppy then I would say that's a fair indication that his gut is telling you its not happy with it either.

Your cav could have an intolorance to grains some dogs are intolorant to grains it maybe worth switching your dog to a grain free kibble and see if that helps improve things.

I would also ditch the Iams and would maybe consider switching to JWB dry which better then Iams. I would prefer to feed a dry food with a higher contents of meat. Lower budget kibles tend to have less then 30% which isnt a lot really.

My pup came to me being fed on a Beta puppy, which I didn't want to use, so moved her onto Arden Grange straight way. It's really not recommended to move a puppy so quickly after you get them as they have a lot of settling in to do and need something stable in their lives, but I want going to buy another bag of Beta however small. She also had bad wind and her poo's were soft and frequent which is down to the high level of grains in the food. On the new food everything changed, the gas went and the output is much firmer and there is less of it. Win, win.:D

ive tried to read the dog food indexes and tbh it just confused me even more.i
Key thing to remember first is dogs aren't cows. They are hypercarnivores not herbivores. You can ask yourself why it is that so many foods are cereal based. One of the keys is understanding indexes etc learning to read (and decipher ;)) the ingredient lists.

The ingredient list is in order of weight. Fresh meat is a lot heavier than dried meat due to water. What a good food should include is a lot of meat, not so much cereals and avoid things like BHA, BHT which are often hidden in a phrase like "EU permitted colorings and preservatives".

A lot of breeders get a reduction in the cost of all their food by claiming themselves as breeders and passing on "puppy packs" of the food. This has the effect that it buys loyalty.

One could ask, why puppy food?

You also have to remember that each dog is different, what suits one dog may not suit another.

Another vote for Arden grange! Our pup was on something crap before- cant remember as it was too long ago. But our lab (3years) is happy on Arden grange. No wind and less poop!

Read this article. It will help you learn how to read dog food labels. "When you are looking for a healthy food for your dog, reviewing the list of ingredients on the back of the bag is a good place to start. By law, pet food labels must list their ingredients by weight. Look for meat, fish, egg, or some type of meat meal or fish meal as the first or second ingredient. Meat, fish, and eggs all have a high biological value, which means they have a high percentage of protein in the form of digestible, usable amino acids. "

Choosing a Dog Food: Compare Ingredients and the Guaranteed Analysis
I would recommend Arden Grange, Burgess Supadog Sensitive, Pero, Skinners,...Avoid foods like Bakers, Beta, Pedigree.

thanks for your reply. I will look in to getting a dry food with a higher meat content, and see if that makes a difference.Actually they would prefer the wet food, given a choice.Maybe I should increase that and cut down a bit on the dry stuff. I will try the JWB dry as well and see if that helps.

I usually change food over about 2 weeks.
5 days, 75% old food, 25% new food
5 days 50% old food, 50% new food
5 days 25% old food, 75% new food.

If you are using a better quality food I would personally weigh rather than feed by eye. You will notice even when on 50% both foods how little you need of a better quality food compared to a poorer quality food. Hope that makes sense.

All that confuses me is everything !!!! How would i go about it with sample sizes ???.
Sorry about all the dozy questions grew up with dogs all my life but this is my first pup as a grown up !! (im 42)
Congratulations on your new pup:)

Always a very confusing time changing foods.

I fed Wainwrights salmon and potato from PAH to all my youngsters as pups with good results and no upset tums and would feed again.
They have fishmongers from PAH and Wainwright grain free now as their normal kibbles both excellent kibbles.

If you do give any of these a try and it does not agree with pup then you can get a full refund on the used bag.;)

Arrrggggggh i emailed beta regarding my incredibly stinky pooey pup and have had a reply that suggests a change in his routine has caused his sloppy poo, errrr in my original enquiry i stated that he had been on this food since weaning ,we have had him since the 24th nov,he had a stable routine etc etc.
The person who replied says we should try him with some probiotics that will help firm it up and that we should feed between 450-500g per day until 20 weeks so why does it say on packet 415-815g per day ??????????????... Perhaps to make a 3kg bag last less than a week and line their pockets ?????...he gets about 600g at present which i also stated in my email ....

On the other hand the person who responded from arden grange sent all manner of attachments regarding feeding and it was personal to my enq (and shes sending samples)

Dont want to buy any more beta out of principal now !!!

Oh and beta email just said Dear .....(surname) and not even a mr/mrs kiss my bot or anything

Avoid Purina who also make Balers, rubbish stuff.

Fish4dogs do a fabulous bag of several samples, a big bag of fish skin treats, 2 pouches of fish mousse for ÂŁ4. Just go to the website and look for the dogs for the disabled goody bag. This is useful for anyone who would like some of their food for training/treats or has a dog intolerant to cereals. I think the fish skins bag is normally nearly ÂŁ6 on it's own. :)
