Im all new to crate training, but the poo and the wees i think will send me crazy, as i speak or type lol I'm on my 3rd load of washing today! We are toilet training him with newspaper and when we can catch him we take him outside, wee is fine on newspaper but he will poo anywhere. Night we take him out for a wee and he goes which is fab but we wake to poo and wet sodden bedding.
Any advice is good advice, we didn't crate with Ronnie. Clyde is only 10 weeks so maybe I'm just expecting too much as i can't remember it being this hard work lol.

Thanks in advance x

You need to set your alarm every 3 hours and take the pup out for a wee ditch the newspapers it only confuses the pup dogs wont mess where they sleep as charliegirl says unless they are really desperate

Do you get up at all during the night or just take him to the toilet before you go to bed?

If you don't, then a puppy as young as him can't be expected to hold his bowels all night. You will need to get up several times to take him outside.

If you are getting up and he is still doing it, then you may need to get up more often.

Thats a mistake I made at the beginning.... assuming a puppy can hold his bladder until morning.... I can just about do it at my age :).... so a puppy has no chance with a small bladder that they have. Every three hours would be a good start ... its a lot of work but hopefully they will get the message and hold it until you get up.... then as they get a bit older you can increase the time gradually between wake ups so eventually they go at night and in the morning.

Don't use newspaper or puppy pads as it confuses puppies and makes them think it's ok to toilet indoors. Take the pup outside at regular intervals especially after waking, eating and playing, and wait patiently until your pup goes to the toilet. When he does finally go, praise like mad and give a treat. If he toilets indoors, don't tell him off, just clear up and use a propriety pet odour cleaner to take away the smell or he will go on the same place again.
At night don't leave him any longer then three hours at a time and take him outside to toilet, no exceptions. If you keep to this regime then he will always want to toilet outside.

This is the exact reason I have my puppies sleep in my room at night. How can you see when they need to toilet when you are upstairs and they are downstairs? No puppy wants to soil it's bed and only do so when forced to.

Re consider your nighttime routine and if possible, have him up in your room. When puppies get all fidgety that is usually a sign they need to go out. As for how long this takes, how long is a piece of string - every puppy is different.

As those before said, given any other choices a dog normally will never choose to toilet in bed.

The key thing is to ensure that firstly the crate is the correct size. If it is too large the dog can get far enough away from where it sleeps to consider 1 half the toilet area and the other the sleep area.
If the crate is too large block off some part with a bit of cardboard or hung sheet as a divider

Can you hear the dog where the crate is? I think for the first weeks this is important. If the dog is making a noise after being settled it is likely needing the toilet. Teach the dog this is not play time. Straight out toilet then back to bed on lead with minimum interaction other than praise for a good job done.

Even if they dont make a noise you should be taking them out over night.
for me this was an alarm at midnight and 6 am then waking when they got restless between those two points.

Wash bedding in BIOLOGICAL washing power and good hot wash to break down wee smell. Also check it is not on floor below. If they can smell even a trace of wee/poo they will always think that is where tolieting is done. As above. Pads and paper inside are counterproductive.

Crate training is only an aid to toilet training, the theory behind it being that a dog wont soil its bed, immediate surrounding area or where it eats, left in there too long and desperate though they will. They still need to be taken out and toileted. Really at 10 weeks he should be on his way to toileting outside baring the odd accident. Paper or pads can actually hamper toilet training. If they have always had paper then it can confuse them and act as a cue that inside is the correct place. A lot of people find when they ditch the pads and paper and concentrate on taking them out regularly and re-enforcing it with praise and treats, toilet training comes on it leaps and bounds. At 10 weeks he will still have limited capacity to hold much for long periods, and they can also not always recognise the need to go far in advance especially if they are engrossed in playing or doing something.
You also do need to clean up with a special pet stain odour remover too as any smells left from accidents will encourage repeats in same area or rooms.

If he cant go through the night yet, which will come with growing, time and training, I always pop mine out when they wake or stir, if he isn't withing sight and sound of you to do it then some people set an alarm once or twice and take them out that way until they can go through. Its not usually very long before they do.

I have only crated two pups and both of them were clean from day one but I was very lucky. If you do not want to get up then I would forget the crate and leave the pup access to the kitchen floor as it is not fair to force him to foul his bed. I have never got up to pups and have just cleaned up in the morning but cant think of anything worse than making the pup fill the crate with poo and wee.

edited to add, my husband is happy to go to bed late and I am happy to get up early so 5 or 6 hours is the most they have been left initially.

Hiya!
I've had my bully for 2 weeks now (he's now 10 weeks old as well) and had the same with the first few nights with him. Asked a few questions on here and got very mixed advice other than just be patient which obviously didn't help me much. Obviously you need to be patient but I'll tell you what helped me and then just use what you think applies. So I found that I wasn't looking out for the signs or the routine, so he would sniff the floor and start lifting his tail (you'll be able to recognise what I mean after a while) and id make a loud noise to startle him so he would stop in his tracks, like a loud clap or a firm NO! Then I'd take him to the newspaper/ training pads (really helpful if you can get hold of them- especially the scented) and just persist with that. Also I found that I had to really get the smell out of the bed, so I would wash it and then dose it in a strong smell like watered vinegar. Persistence is the key and rewards don't go down a miss! Eventually he was crying or barking very loudly when he wanted letting out. After a couple of weeks he's been pretty good, a few accidents a day but 75% of the time he's bang on! Hope this helps
