Hi,

Im looking for some advice on something that's bothering me and my boyfriend.

Our dog was very poorly over the bank holiday weekend and had to go into the vets all weekend for treatment. While she was in there she chewed the drip pump which apparently costs £700!? They are putting it on our bill which is now over £2000 and many people we have told have said this is wrong of them as they have insurance for that sort of thing?

We are insured but I cant see the insurance company paying out for a piece of machinery and if they don't the bill comes to us to pay which we cant afford!

Does anyone know where we stand or have had this happen?:crying:
Personally I would think that it would come with the territory and be part of their own insurance. Surely they should be responsible for her whilst in ther care, and be responsible for monitoring her. However this is just logical thinking on my part. Best thing too do would be to telephone your insurance and discuss it with them.

I take it that you have enough insurance to cover the whole bill, its just a matter of them saying they wont pay.

As everyone has said....that is there fault! they should have been watching your dog in there carethe whole time...they should have the insurance for their equipment...contact the manager in writing and ask for a reply in writing! So everything is in evidence. If this isn't sorted take all documentation to the Citazens advice Beuro (sp) if they still dont sort it out...threaten them with the Ombudsman!!!!! that should REALLY sort them out!

As everyone else has said, this is not your responsibility so as I see it you have two options.

You can either sort it out yourself with the practice manager, request a meeting with them and explain your concerns. Your dog should not have been left unsupervised with any medical equipment where he could get to it. Ask for a fully itemised bill and I bet that a large chunk of it is down to his accommodation in their care, well if he was unsupervised for long enough to chew through 700 quids worth of gear, he was hardly under their care was he? Personally I would play up until they dropped a significant portion of the bill, if not all of it. Their actions (or more accurately, lack of) have put your dogs health at serious risk and now they are asking you to pay for it.

Your second option is to hand it over to your insurers to deal with, but advise them that you don't think the bill is justified and that you believe the practice has been negligent. If anyone can get out of paying a bill, it's an insurance company.

Thanks for all your advice everyone! :D

We had a phone call this morning from the actual vet that treated Sophie to see how she is and he apolgised and has taken the pump off our bill, said it shouldn't have been on there. We didn't ring anyone at this point so he corrected it before we had to!

SORTED! Now fingers crossed the insurance pays for the rest!

i would still try for a case of neglect you know but thats your call
and im so glad your litttle one is better x

sounds like it is sorted. Accidents happen and they did not even need to tell you it had happened. A follow up call from the vet is good news and the pump must have been put on the bill by an officious member of staff. I would not say any more about it and would not change vets if you have been happy in the past with them. A vet that will do a follow up call is worth their weight in gold - though he may have been checking there was no ill effects from chewing their equipment!
