When its hot do you open your windows or believe its better to keep them closed to keep the hot air out? or do you keep them closed to keep bugs/spiders out?

We have ours all open back and front of the house but close the Venetian blinds to keep the sun out. I hang fly screen thingies in front of the doors. At night I close the windows in the rooms with lights on until we go to bed/lights out then open them again.

Depends where we are living.
In the flat we have right now, we have to have all the windows open when it's hot, to get a flow of air, but we have nets in front of the windows to trap the flies (hopefully anyway!).
When we had air con, we kept most of the windows closed as the air con worked better that way. But we had a window open at the back of the house and a door with a curtain, to get fresh air rather than re-con air :).

We sleep with the window open except when it's cold, as I don't want to be breathing in cold air (got that from my mum :))..

The windows are open and the door to the garden ...so we have what breeze there is wafting through the house. Although i have a gate on the back door so the dogs can't go out and sunbathe ....at least not until it's cooler.

I have the windows open at night, too ...but yup ...if the lights are on the windows are closed to deter the flying bugs!

Windows open and blinds closed during the day if it is proper hot hot hot (which rarely happens here :) ) and then blinds/windows open during the early part of the evening/when the sun has set to let cooler air in. Windows open and blinds overnight. I only close them, as other have mentioned, when the lights are on to try and keep the beasties out.

Open, and the downstairs on the catch at night, so some air can still get in. Upstairs are open all the time. It's definitely fresher and cooler in our bedroom when we go to bed.
If we have been away, it's horrible to get back to a stuffy hot house. So open must work better.

Sophie chases flies when they swoop down to her level, but she has developed a new 'anxiety'.... a couple of times recently a fly has managed to get in and has stayed on our ceiling, flitting about from corner to corner now and again. And Sophie runs and hides under the table when this happens.
So we have to get rid of the fly before she will settle

Arthur is similar. He catches and eats them if they come close enough but if there is one buzzing about and he can't catch it he goes all silly and hides under the desk in my office.

yup, thats what I do to. I do have the back door open all the time though, but it opens onto a shady yard so doesnt let any heat in.
I keep the curtains closed all the time though...nothing much to look at outside anyways!

Sam tried to run through a doorway just as the front door was opened, allowing a breeze to blow through as the back door was already open. It slammed on his tail, and he kept running, losing 2 inches of tail in the process. So never again (and too late for short-tailed Sam).

Also Rosie - at the other end of the scale - is scared of flies. I think she thinks they're bees, but she runs away and hides under the bed.

So when it's hot like this, we just get sweaty!

Ive got some windows open at the moment, but they do all have fly screens on, back door is open as its shaded, Ive got shutters on the windows also, and most are down, when its get really hot, I close everything down, shutters down, most of the windows closed and doors shut, it makes a huge difference in keeping the house cooler, I then open everything up in the evening, today has reached 39'c ... but July/August will get hotter,

Most of mine are all open on the catch (they are pretty much all opened on the latch when the heating goes off and stay like that till the end of September) because I have indoor kitties but I have a screen on the front door so I will open that later but currently as the sun is beating on the front of the house I think it allows more heat in if I open it during the day but it gets a nice through draft going when it's opened in the evening as I have the larder window open for the cats to access their run through it.
