Orijen or Acana dry - question

Thomas is on a wet diet for his main meals but I just give him dry in his treat ball. At the moment he has Applaws and probably eats 2 handfuls per week that's all but he seems to just gulp it down with no chewing. Applaws pieces are quite small. Has any body who has used Applaws also used Orijen or Acana? How do the sizes compare? If they are larger I may move on to these.

Meeko has Orijen both the fish/chicken varieties, which although different in shape are much the same size as Applaws so doubt it will make any difference.Cant comment on Acana as he hasnt tried that one.It does make you wonder though, where the,"dry is better for teeth" nonsense comes from

Vet talk I think :( can't see how they can claim it at all.

He was on RC BSH which is quite a large kibble, needed chewing. Much better in terms of size and possibly would help teeth but not as high a meat content or grain free so no good really.

As i say it's a small amount but good for a snack and to keep him entertained, plus much less mess if I do decide to show him as he'll stay cleaner on the day

We gave Applaws in the past, and we once had about 2.5 kg of Orijen. Like @buffie, we never tried Acana, because I heard other people complaining about its smell.

What I can tell you is the cats loooved Orijen. Some on the Romanian forums say it's better to give them diverse types of super premium dry food, 'cause they are completing each other.

I am no longer feeding my cats with dry (and I'm sooo haaaaapyyyy :p about it)

oops, forgot to mention that: Orijen are not rounded in shape, as far as I can remember, they are triangle-like kibbles (not sure though) and it's easier for the cats to catch in their mounths. Or was it the taste that made them so ... industrious?

I so wish Meeko would eat only wet food, but, sadly he needs his "kitty krack"We have got it down to about a quarter of his daily food intake, not ideal but at least it is the top end of the dry food.

I know exactly what you mean, the truth is we would have never stopped the dry, but one of the two had become totally addicted to it and she would no longer eat wet. As I had in mind raw for a long time, that was the decisive moment. It's been VERY hard, but also VERY possible :thumbup1:

So in the end, I should thank her for the big change.

I can definitely agree that the Orijen pieces are pretty small and they they loooove it - all three of mine go for it madly (esp the fish variety) though I only give it as a treat in a treat ball or in throw/catch games (Oscar can catch them!). They liked Applaws but love Orijen :)

Orijen Chicken is triangular and more flat and brittle than Acana Grasslands (the two flavours we've tried so far). I like the smell of both and I can't stand Applaws (Orijen smells like furikake, a Japanese sprinkle for rice, so I always take a good snif inside the bag and go 'mmmmmm' :) ).

Ari loves both more than wet food. I blame them for making her go off wet for a few weeks and making me hold the wet food bowl to her face every morning and cheer her up while she eats, so that she can have her usual intake of liquids.

I've seen her throw up dry food and most of it was intact kibble, and I used this argument with the vet to justify my lack of belief in the cleaning properties of dry food, which made him just recommend a brand 'that has special tooth cleaning kibbles'. :001_huh: But he agreed that recent studies point out that wet food can be beneficial for indoor cats because of the dilution of the urine (I wonder if they didn't came to the same conclusion about outdoor cats urine just because their toilet is unaccessible).

So, to continue giving Ari the wet food that I believe is the best for her, I now have to start to brush her teeth. She's going back to the vet on January 7th for her booster dose, so brushing her teeth is my holidays resolution. By the way, I'm still in the fase where you let the cat lick the toothpaste off your finger... and she hated the toothpaste fish flavour :(. It will be a long holiday.
