Insurance

I am looking at getting insurance for the 3 italian greyhound pups. My whippets are not insured as basically it would cost me more to insure them than my vets bills cost I prefer for them to put a little money away each week especially as 4 of them are older dogs the premiums would be quite expensive.

The thing is I can't see Mac and Tabitha being a problem but Micca has a permant luxating patella grade 4. The knee is permanantly out of socket it'll not go back in at all. I have spoken to the vet about it and she says even if Micca was referred to an orthopedic vet it is doubtful because Micca is so tiny and delicate that they will be able to operate. Her bones are that fine the vet says they would not be able to pin the bones. This is not a problem as she was either born with it or it happened when she was very young it doesn't bother her at all she runs and plays she can use the leg but when she walks she throws her hip out.

The vet says I would not have to tell the insurance as it will come up on her records but we would not be able to claim if she should suffer any injury to that leg and obviously because it is a birth defect we would not be able to claim for it to be operated on if it was possible.

The question I have is should she injure her other leg would the insurance say I could not claim as it is because she is compensating for her bad leg with the good leg. Take into consideration that at the moment she weighs just over 2kg the bad leg is weight baring when she runs you would not know there was anything wrong with her it is only when she walks that you can see that she has a strange gait.

Also can anyone reccomend any insurance companies who are reasonably priced and offer a decent discount for insuring more than 1 dog.

I'm not really sure about Micca but I insure these 2 monkeys with Petplan....I don't think they are the cheapest but I know my vet will settle with them directly. I don't have thousands tucked away to cover a hefty bill and then try to claim it back

I tried Petplan online but it says at the start if you wish to add more pets click on add another pet after you have a quote for the first pet but no button appears. I will have to try phoning them I think.

I find Argos very good and they give a discount for a second pet.
They are much cheaper than petplan I think you will find and seem to be fairly non quibble.

I think you have to see what the form says, if it asks you for pre existing conditions you will have to mention it, if it doesnt , then as the vet says it will show up on the vet records if you have a claim for something else.
It might be safer just to mention it anyway, so you dont get half way through a treatment for something else and discover you are not covered because you have ommitted to tell them about it.

Pet Plan will automatically give you a discount on the first animal you insure when you insure the next one! (Why they don't apply the discount to the second one I don't know).

You don't have to declare pre-existing conditions when you take out the cover BUT if you make a claim they will ask for the full medical history and exclude any pre-existing condition from it.

There are lots of companies that give discounts for multiple pets. But do make sure that the cover you want for your dog is the right one - it's the cover that's important, not the discount for multiple pets.

Click on the link in my sig and you'll find a list of ethical insurers (e.g. they pay out without too much arguing ;) ). If you want your vet paid directly most do - some, like VetsMediCover, prefer it that way BUT you must make sure your vet will accept direct payments from them. 99% of vets will agree to be paid by Pet Plan because they've got a good reputation for paying out (and quickly) but others may be more suspect and your vet may not agree. It's the vet's decision - not yours.
