Couch or sofa?

What's the difference? I never in my life have called a couch a "sofa", nor has anyone I know in real life, but most people I come across in forums, and I don't just mean this one, say sofa, not couch. Why?

I don't think I've ever even said "sofa" out loud in a sentence, LOL.

i have sofa in the living room - the "front room" is being used for the something else (clinic) so we use the dining room as our living space and have had to adopt the "living room" phrase so as to avoid confusion...o_O

Growing up...it was a settee in the front room!

We have 2 sofa's and they are in our Living room - but we only have one open plan room downstairs so can't really say front room or lounge :D
Do sometimes use the word Settee - don't think I've ever said couch :p
Weirdly at my mums we say front room even though their lounge is at the back of the house

I believe 'couch' is American which is why you won't see it used on this predominately UK based forum.
When I was a child, I always remember referring to sitting on the 'couch' It wasn't until I was a teenager that I was even remotely aware of anything American, so I didn't pick it up from there

Nowadays though, I am more likely to refer to the 'sofa' :)

Just had a thought about the word couch - i do use it but not in a domestic setting.
Dr's, psychiatrists etc have couches :) and of course there is the infamous casting couch ;)

We have a sofa in the living room, though sometimes we call it the den. It’s definitely not a formal living room, others might call it the family room. It’s actually an open house plan, so the kitchen and living room are all one large area.
I’ve always heard sofa (both parents are originally from north of the Mason-Dixon line) and only heard it called a couch until I moved to the south. No one says sofa here, it’s always couch.
