Whiskas kitten food

We've generally been feeding our two (we think they're about 9 or 10 weeks old) kittens a mixture of wet and dry Iams kitten food. However as the supermaket we shop at doesn't sell Iams, we've ended up feeding them Whiskas kitten food. We thought this was fine until one of the kittens had very runny poo. We switched back to Iams and the poo seemed to go back to normal... but last night my OH fed one of the kittens some Whiskas food (not the first one that had the runny poo). When we got up this morning there was very runny poo in the litter tray.

When we got the kittens, as far as we know, they had been fed a mixture of wet and not been eating any one brand in particular.

Could this be due to the Whiskas?

They have a vet appointment booked as I am a bit worried it might be a parasite or tummy bug from when they were living in the outside before we got them. They have been wormed and fleaed once we got them, so I'm hoping it's not that.

Any ideas much appreciated!

I am by no means an expert but from what I can gather Whiskas is quite a rich food for a youngster. My little one has never had anything else but Whiskas wet and dry.

You should perhaps wean your little ones onto it slowly, introducing little bits at a time. As with most animals, a sudden change in diet can have the effect you are talking about.

Probably not very helpful and I would still say take them to the vet just in case! You don't want them getting dehydrated...

I'm sure someone will be along to give better sound advice than I have!

Thanks Penny.... we think there might have been blood in one of the poos (which is why I made the vet appointment) but it's hard to tell once they've buried it. When we switched one back to Iams the runny poo and (possible) blood went away as it wasn't in the poos later on. I'm hoping it is just the food and nothing more serious, but hopefully the vet will work it out and in the meantime we'll try to stop them getting dehydrated if the poo stays runny...

stop feeding them Iams, it's terrible for their kidneys. try felix or tescos brand, believe it or not it's better ingredients and better for kitty. if you can afford it i can make some other suggestions but if you are on a budget those are the best of the cheaper brands.

also you need to rememeber that when you change foods suddenly the kittens will have to adjust and may have a little of the runs. the best way to avoid this is to not change often and when you do to do it gradually with the old food.

also blood in stools can be common in heavy diarrhea you might need to get some advice from your vets as to what would be best. they may ask you to feed boiled chicken or a sensitive diet for a few days to settle the gut of the kittens. but then you will be asked to go back on their normal diet. i deffinatly would suggest not to go back to Iams. it's full of cereals and additives and i've seen many clients in the vets coming in with urinary problems after feeding it regularly.
Felix, Royal Canin, Hills, Nature's Menu, Bozita, Orijin and Applaws(Encore) make much nicer foods. Iams, Whiskas and Go Cat i personally wouldn't feed to mine and I nor the vet i work for and go to would suggest it to any client at work.
