I woke up this morning feeling ill - got a really bad cold, sore throat and ache.

As I don't have a garden I've got to take the girls out. So I took the ball thrower on the park and chucked that around for them. It seemed to tire them out.

Came home, and slept for 5 hours. Just walked them round the block and that will be it, apart from pee breaks obviously.

This morning was the one time I wish I had someone to walk them for me/ a garden, but I just have to get on with it.

Is it business as usual when you're ill or do you do less?

I'm lucky to have a massive garden with fields so if I'm really not up to it I can still take the dogs for a run around. Plus they can go for a wander themselves. If I'm feeling not too bad I just dose myself up and head out for an hour or so then come back and have a good rest. I have to take my puppy out at least every other day otherwise she goes a bit stir crazy, but if I'm really ill I can get my brother to take her if need be. I'm afraid part of owning dogs is going above and beyond the line of duty for them, bad weather or illness never come before the fur-babies :D

Kinda lucky as walk 5 min up road/ bridle way and have a field they can be let off in. But as long as they are with me they don't care about a walk, right now is heating on, blanket, Kleenex, lemon tea and me debating on bed now feeling ergh and they had a 20min mooch earlier amd both curled up with me right now.gonna head out at 6 for another mooch. Hoping I can do a good walk tomo.

I have a garden, but can't guarantee that Jack will toilet to order out there, so I would probably take him for a short walk just to be sure he went. There are one to two spots on a short walk round the block when I can bank on it :)

If I felt really ill, then I'm afraid Jack would have to put up with the bare minimum walk required for toileting TBH.

He won't suffer from missing a proper walk for a couple of days.

Recently hurt my back and we could only manage a slow waddle round the nearby field - he coped ;)

I avoid having a RIGID routine for this very reason.

Life happens :)

I have a stupidly tiny garden, so like you, I have to make sure she gets out at least once every day.
I am super lucky though in that there are 4 of us adult and competent living here, plus my parents who would also walk Amber if needed, so although I usually do the lions share, I could always offload duties if I had to.
Must be tough if there is just you. Could you arrange with a doggie friend to be each other's 'last resort' walker?

I haven't been ill in years thank goodness !! However arthritis in my hands and knees and a bad back is enough thankyou :p
I am suprised I do not rattle when I walk the amount of medication I take :)

If I do however get ill I just have to get on with it , being single with teenage twins and an 8 year old I just plod on .....

Daisy will happily toilet in garden, and play, so if I'm really feeling rotten I just let her go out there and run about. I get v grouchy when I'm ill so forcing myself on a walk probably wouldn't be nice for either of us! OH will usually take her out for a while in that situation though.

I don't think a day or two off or of reduced walks will do any harm. Daisy didn't go out for three days last week as I thought she might be going into season. False alarm but she was perfectly happy in the house and garden and it doesn't seem to have done her any harm!

I still take Shadow out when I am ill - but I only have to cross over the lane and I have access to secure empty fields, where there are no walkers so I can just let him off and let him run his energy off if I am not feeling up to a good walk.

Either that or I let my uncle have him for a day - plenty of fun there lol

If you are really poorly and there are no easy options for you I am sure that just going for short walks won't cause to many problems for them - it's only a couple of days, and they would still be getting out and about.

Thursday i had a migraine and still had to walk.. she won't toilet in our yard plus i'd feel bad not letting her stretch her legs.. business as usual whilst OH is at work, just no 'big long' walks like we normally do on my days off :) .
Its so horrible walking when ill.. hope you feel better soon :)

It depends really, I find a good dog walk helps distract me from a bad cold, rattles the cobwebs.I never want to set off but when I get back I usually feel much better.
If I sprain my ankle or hurt my back I walk to my local park and focus on mental stimulation, finding games. Another alternative is going to a heavily populated rabbit field and a long line, this is most people equivelent to a ball on a walk for my lot.
I have walked my dogs when I have taken a sick day, it worries me a bit but to be honest its when you are poorly that you want them to be tired and sleepy most.
I usually manage multiple short walks close to home if I am really poorly, me and my other half share responsibilities so help each other if we aren't well. I am very lucky to have a great dog walker I could call but it hasn't been necessary for illness yet.

One dose of flu I had, I tried to take Ziggy for a walk (Kite didn't exist back then) and had to sit down in a field about 200 yards from my house. It was winter and the ground was wet. Got up after a while and staggered home. Until I recovered, I lay on the sofa and threw a ball through the open door into the kitchen, just standing up to take her out for toilet purposes.

After I had my knee injury then later surgery, I couldn't afford a dog walker every day so they got a walk every other day and just played in the house and did some training on the non-walk days. We all survived, no problems - well apart from my arthritis now!

I'm lucky enough to have a decent size garden, Tango's quite happy to potter round and do whatever she has to do, not really bothered about walks, specially if it's cold and wet !!I do usually walk her for about 15 minutes at some point in the day, and hubby is happy to walk her in the evening after work.
If I'm not feeling too good she'll just mooch round in the garden .

Business as usual here, although there have been times when the boys have had less of a walk than normal. I think the worst walk they had was when I got side slammed by a boxer dog the previous evening, I drove  to the field in second gear, (hurt like hell to change gears) and hobbled very slowly to the first bit of wood and then could take no more and hobbled back to the car and then went up A&E. the boys were only out about half an hour that morning, hubs did the evening run otherwise it would have just been a sniff in the garden.

Oh I was on crutches for a week.

Business as usual when I am ill (don't get ill often, touch wood!!) as long as I am safe to drive to our walking spots, otherwise more local walks than normal.

We sometimes abandon walks if Jackson is stressy so he is used to walks being of variable length. We have a sort of field ( public open space) just behind our tiny garden so if I'm a real grot we just go there so I know home is close and he's quite happy with that. Looking after yourself should be the first priority.

It depends on the illness like today I've had an awful IBS attack and can't really be that far from a toilet and I'm in a lot of pain (luckily I took both of them on a long walk this morning with lots of off lead running) most illnesses I can cope with and usually take the dogs for a walk and luckily I have garden to let them so they can go to the loo.If I'm really ill it won't do them any harm to not go for a walk for a day or two.

Since I live in a flat I don't have a choice. No matter how ill I am I will always take Axel out for his regular walks, but their length will depend on how bad I'm ill or what exactly is wrong. A couple of times when I had a nightmarish migraine I took him out 4 times instead of the regular 3, but they were short walks around the block and I would go back to sleep after each walk. When I had the flu I walked Axel as usual, but with no games as I literally couldn't turn my body/ lift my arms to throw the frisbee. However, when I am ill and can't give Axel a nice walk and he only gets short walks I will make it up by doing some training at home.
