Pippi JRT has developed a swelling to the side of her anus. I noticed it on our evening walk,if she wasn't speyed I would have thought she was coming into season but she seemed fine running around not showing any signs of pain. Then since we got home it's swelled up quite a bit and she's obviously uncomfortable. I've given her a dose of metacam to help with the pain and will have her in the vet first thing in the morning.

She wouldn't settle and looked a little distressed so I've given her a blanket to snuggle under and she's asleep now.

I'm assuming maybe one of her anal sacs has become impacted or infected, but not sure because I've never had a dog who had these symptoms before. She's not licking it or bothering it at all but I'm worried about her because she's my little baby. Do I need the emergency vet or will she be ok until in the morning when my vet opens at 9am, it's only 2 mins away in the car.

Sounds like an anal gland abscess - I would personally take her to the vet tonight.
Absolutely. It does sound like an abscess. One of my PRTs had one and it needed antibiotics.

Apparently, they're pretty painful.

It does sounds like it could be an infected anal gland and you may find that you have an abcess forming. Nanuq had one burst a couple of months back, no normal anal gland symptoms at all, first I knew was when she was going out the door for a walk and I saw blood to one side near the anal opening, when I checked there was a hole.

They gave her metacam for the pain, and antibiotics.

It does sound like an anal gland abscess. If she's had some Metacam and is comfortable I would wait until morning personally; if you're worried then certainly contact the vet tonight.

Can I just ask what anal glands look like because I have never had a dog that has had a problem with them.

I did see a Dally at Richmond show that was walking in front of me and it had two lumps, one either side of it's anus, they were oval in shape about the size of a seedless grape. The only thing I could think of was anal glands but you can't see anything like that on my two and never seen it on my other dogs either.

Thanks for all the replies. She's settled down now and doesn't seem to be in as much pain.

Thanks :) the metacam has kicked in and she's comfortable, relaxed and asleep now so I'm not so worried now. If anything changes I'll give the out of hours vet a ring.

If you're feeling brave google anal sacs, there's loads of images. I've looked at a lot tonight. Only look if you've got a strong stomach.

Good to hear Pippi is comfortable, let us know how she gets on.
I was hoping to avoid google images as I didn't expect them to be pretty but braved it. What I saw on that Dally was nothing like the internet pics, it was more like a row of three human belly buttons, two pregnant woman outties with an innie in the middle .....:D:D:D

Hope Pippi gets on ok at the vets.

Although its not nice what shes going through your thread has made me smile for all the wrong reasons. Firstly the title it intrigued me, I never though I would want to read anything with the word anus in the title.
Secondly the warning about googling anal sacs not being for the faint hearted and I definitely haven't ventured into google to do so. So I am relieved you told me this!

Keep us all updated on Pippi after the vets check.
