Scratching oak furniture

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can stop my cast from scratching my oak cabinet? I've recently bought a feliway defuser thinking maybe that it could help, when I see him do it I say no and put him next to his scratch pad in the hope that he will start using that (he does occasionally) but other times he goes straight back to the cabinet.

Your cat will have his scent on the cabinet now which is why he goes back to it, have you tried getting some spray catnip and spraying his scratchpost with it, i have 8 cats, and not one of them scratches my furniture,
I have 2 quite tall catposts, and they like to climb and sit on the platforms
Not sure what you could use to cover the scent on your cabinet, that wouldnt spoil the wood, but i would put the cat scratcher in a different area, and if he goes to the cabinet, say NO sharply, without shouting, just pick him up and take him to the catscratcher,
Hope this works for you

He needs better alternatives. I noticed you said scratch pad in the singular. I would recommend at least one per room. Try different types too until you establish which he prefers. Make them big and sturdy so he can stretch out full as he uses them. Meanwhile double sided sticky tape or tinfoil on the oak furniture will stop him from using that. You can remove the deterrent when he is completely happy with his 'official' scratching posts.
