I have a 10 week old pug and it is constantly scratching and knowing at it's back near tail, it has dry skin at this area..I took to the vet and they gave me sebomild p which I think makes him worse when he has it put on..he is up a lot at night biting and whinnying..
I feed the dog on pets at home make ...a little wet with dry
I just don't know how to calm this down, there is no fleas or anything been found, and he just got that advocate for him last week

if its pets at home branded food it would be the 1st thing to change. Cheaper dog foods use wheat as the carbohydrate source and it is a common allergen and also unknown meat.
Better dry brands in pets at home are - Wainwrights, Arden Grange, Fishmongers, James wellbeloved and Burns.
Better wets - Natures menu, nature harvest, naturediet, wainwrights (trays) and fishmongers.

My Pug x was fed on that when i got him and since moving him onto James Wellbeloved i have had no problems at all. so id probably start with changing that first. Oh and please please show us some pictures.

well just by what people say on here, for skin problems a grain free food is usually recommended. Its usually the gluten in grains that dogs cant tolerate, i think wainwrights contains barley which contains gluten, so could possibly be that. I dont think wainwrights have a grain free food. The only grain free food in pets at home is Fishmongers I think, that is also a pets at home own brand so basically wainwrights.

Tbh skin problems can be very frustrating, it could be anything, dust mites, pollen, allergies to certain meats, grains etc you name it.
Are you using flea and tick treatments?

Offer some raw meat, Pets at Home have a good frozen range or go to the supermarket and get some economy chicken wings and try feeding some of these.
I would like to say change to all raw for a more natural and less troublesome food but I do understand that it is not everyones favourite and not always convenient!
I agree that you should try a wheat / grain /rice free food but things will not get better over night, it could take a while!

Did the vet check his anal glands as full anal glands can make them itchy? My oldest Bichon had to have his emptied when he was 15 weeks old. Might also be sarcoptic mange, my dog had this too but was easily treated with Stronghold.

Advocate can irritate an existing skin condition and is not something I have, or would ever use on my dogs, too strong chemical wise for my liking. So rather than it helping with his problem it may have actually made it worse. For fleas I treat the house with Indorex house spray and for the dog I add half a clove of garlic (10kgs dog) twice a week to their raw food. Treating the house is a must. For worms I use Drontal, round worms and tapeworms and I have their stools tested twice yearly for lung and heart worm - always been clear of all worms in testing but Drontal isn't a worry for me as its relatively mild. :)

Have his anal gland checked too, I'm surprised the vet didn't check them anyway as its a simple process. Too keen on smothering dogs with chemicals that cost the earth. :(

Well thanks very much for your input, I have just registered with this vet and been told they are ok, but iam now disappointed already...I totaly agree with what you say and understand, only thing is, its a bit late for reversing the advocate, so I dont know what ro do qith that situation, but I will be following your instructions on the other things.
Thing that annoys me is that your supposed to trust vets and half the time they are no better than google...
I was with pets at home vet with previous pug but did not want to go back to them as its a money making company and I believe its just about rinsing you of as much cash as possible, thats just my opinion

To be honest I love my vet, and trust them completely with health matters, but vets are not nutritionilists and when it comes to their food advice, I ignore it. Also, they get commission for selling certain foods like Hill's, so they're going to promote it.
