Cats and open fires!

Well it is a dark chilly evening and I would like nothing more than to light up my ( reproduction, coal effect gas ) open fire.
I never worried about the oldies getting near it, they seem pretty sensible, even though they have all had the odd visit up the chimney at some time or other.
However, Mitzy has literally thrown herself at it several times and so I am terrified about her or Milo hurting themselves. I suppose it must give out enough heat to act as a warning, but I am still scared.
I have had an internet search for fire guards and nothing completely suitable has presented itself yet.
Does anyone else have this dilemma?

I got it from my local garden centre/pet supplies place, but it is fab and my two love it for lounging on and under and and general cat craziness. It's made by Cleo but I cannot find my one online anywhere I think it was around ÂŁ45ish

Great pics, thanks guys.
Buffie....Meeko is SO plotting some mischief with the fire guard in that shot!
Both of those screens look fine to me, not too intrusive but fairly protective, will continue the search to get one to fit my fire which is a Victorian arch style.

I lit my first fire of the season a week or so ago. The first time since I got Stanley. Have to admit he was great and loved it. Mind you I didn't go to bed until it had died down and the fire guard was securely in place.
My other beasts (newfies) do a runner to the cold conservatory as soon as I light a fire so it was nice to still have company!!!!
Sorry about the quality of the pic-taken on my phone......

I have the same problem.Fitted a new open gas fire last year with no cats around .This year we have Meeko the nosiest, most reckless kitten that was ever born.So I have bought a guard and actually have it fastened securely(Ican hardly get it off)to the wall so that he doesnt go up the chimney or play with the coals  but he still tries to climb the guard(not when the fire is on)and has been seen trying to remove it from the wall.:lol:I'm considering changing it for an enclosed, glass fronted one.Not a good photo but shows the problem.

Some cats have no sense! Jazz will sit so close to the fire his fur actually starts to smoke! :scared: He'll be snoozing away oblivious to the fact that he's almost on fire, and I have to pick him up and put him somewhere else!

He also likes warming his butt by the fire and has on numerous occassions singed his tail .

The scary thing is when he was younger he figured out HOW TO SWITCH THE FIRE ON!!! Thankfully, he doesn't bother to do this anymore.
