This is a really silly question , but can you you walk your dog too much?

I took Max round the field this morning for half an hour with his ball, then again for an hour when i got home from work at 1.30pm with his best Dobey friend and he usually goes running with my husband round the wood for half an hour at 6.30pm.

Trouble is , everytime someone comes or goes through the front door or dares to put a pair of shoes on or coat he gets so excited, grabbing at his lead or pulling the keys from the hook! Bless him, he looks so sad when I say "no , maybe later", even cries as the door for a few minutes which I totally ignore (even though I feel guilty)

I reckon he would go out for 10 hours a day if I let him! Do you think its because I take him out too much?

Firstly can I point out that I am no expert but I recently found out (via other forum members) that I was over walking Henrick, until a dog is 18 months old you should walk him/her no more than 5 minutes forevery month they have been alive then gradually increase it after that, how old is Max?

Dobies tend to be creatures of habit or so I was told many moons ago, if they get used to a short 30 min walk each day that is what they will expect and that is what they will be happy with, if they walk 10 miles a day that is what they will be happy with and that is what they will expect :D so to sum up how many miles do you think Max is expecting lol.

:) I am sure someone serious will be along any moment

He is 2 in August, totally full of beans! I would think for every mile I cover he covers 3 as he runs around constantly! Recently took him to the Peak District camping and my husband and I decided to keep it light and did a 10 km walk, Max probably covered over double that but never even so much as worked up a sweat!! He is the best fun I've ever had (Hope the husband doesn't read this!! lol)

I guess the more he gets the more he wants! I should be much thinner than I am.

Dont know much about the breed, obviously you will so if you think about what they were originally bred to do, be guided by that, what would be too much walking for one breed wouldnt be nesessarly too much for a another breed. I have springers, so thinking what they are bred to do if they didnt get lots of exercise they would go mad ime sure, but it would be far too much for another breed.

I think the average person would be unable to walk too much for the average dog!! My chihuahuas regularly walk 2 hours a day and could easily do more. I imagine you'd give up way before your dobie and considering he has 2 extra legs then thats probably about right!!LOL:D

I really dont think you can "over-walk" a dog, even a pup!! (unless u end up pulling a dead weight by the lead :D)
You can probably over-exercise a pup, just like a kid, because it is bad for the joints, and early muscle growth can restrict body development (im no expert though!) etc but to me that would involve things like jumping, proper running, agility type of activities..not the normal doggy-walk!!
My SBT goes out for 1hour and a half on average per day, he is about 10months now, and occasionnally we do a bit of roller/running and jumping and on week-ends longer walks.. and if I wasnt doing that hed be running wild in the house  (which is what is used to do the first month when I got him but couldnt take him out properly yet :D)
