Bozita tins vs tetrapacks

I put in an order for Bozita tins a couple of weeks back and when I saw it on Saturday, I noticed it was more of a pate consistency than the tetrapacks, with a little jelly.

I initially bought them because Molls loves her jelly, and I was trying to get a good balance of quality food and jelly, which is why I went for the tins - more food and works out cheaper than the tetrapacks - however, she's not a fan of it at all. I put in a huge order yesterday for the tetrapacks because I know she eats them and the price difference isn't too huge between the tins and the tetrapacks.

Has anyone else noticed the difference in consistency? Does it mean that the tins are better, meat-wise, than the tetrapacks? I'm gonna try and feed her the two types of Bozita, as well as the Smilla, and I hope to get her on Animonda after Christmas. Is this enough of a rotation, or does there need to be more?

Yes, tins are pate; tetrapacks are cubed meat in jelly/gravy. Nutritionally the tins used to be better (the high meat content claim of the tetrapaks only refers to the meaty cubes; not the overall content of the pak - so beware. Personally, I don't think that the tetrapaks are any better than Whiskas and co; well, perhaps marginally but not a lot) but tended to be made up of mostly offal. They have changed their labelling on the tins but I am not sure to what extent that reflects a changed recipe or just a different label.

Smilla is dirt cheap, which is I guess why it appeals to you, but its quality has suffered recently when they reduced the meat content (by all accounts) in some of the flavours by 30%.

Given your strained resources at the moment, however, I would just feed her what she likes - as long as it is wet :p - and when you are in a slightly better position financially next year I would approach the food issue then.

The Bozita tetra packs say either chunks in jelly or chunks in sauce... the Bozita tins dont... they are pate consistency.

Have you tried Grau in your rotation? I have a mixture of:

Bozita chunks in jelly (all flavours)
Animonda Carny ( tins, pate, i usually buy a mixed economy pack)
Animonda Carny ocean (tins, flakes, again mixed economy pack)
Animonda Exotic (pouches, pate, mixed flavours)
Animonda Rafine Soup (pouches, chunks in gravy, mixed trial pack)
Grau (tins, pate, mixed economy pack)

I usually mix any pate consistency food with the bozita chunks in sauce... and the ocean/exotic for weekend treats!

I thought that Zooplus had discontinued the pate? Utterly bamboozled now. Is the meat content within the chunks not higher than Whiskas, no? If there's too much offal in the tetrapacks would it be better then not to feed it?

Yep, that's exactly why Smilla appeals :arf: I will be putting her on better quality pate as of next year, although the price of Grau is rather daunting. If some Smilla flavours are down by 30%, what does that leave the meat content as now?

Ohh yes, she'll always be on wet. I would never go back to dry now unless I was absolutely desperate. She got so chubby, and that was only when she was on two small handfuls between meals.

I hope to feed Grau at some point, but probably only as a treat as the price seems to have hiked considerably. How do you find Animonda Carny, is it good?

Can't say iv tried it myself lol but my Momin loves it... :D

But to be quite fair he pretty much eats anything! He adores the ones i give him as treats ocean/rafine/exotic and he loves the Multi meat cocktail flavour in the tins! The consistency is the same as the grau, packed very tight, little jelly between the meat and insides of tin, needs a thorough forking. I only give him the bozita chunks in sauce mixed with a pate style to add a little more moisture as i think the pate can be a little dry and he doesnt drink much water!

Right, Bozita used to have three ranges

1) tetrapak in jelly/gravy
2) tetrapak in pate
3) tins (pate)

They have discontinued number 2 - the tetrapaks in pate, which, unfortunately, arguably were the best of the lot. Ah well...

Some of the flavours went down from a declared meat content of 60% to 40%. So that is a 33% reduction. But what do you expect for that amount of money?

I would wonder at your sanity if you had tried them yourself :arf: I do worry about pates being quite dry, so I usually mix in a bit of water and Molls seems to prefer that, with the Smilla anyways. Might have to do that with the Animonda.

Aaaahhh I see, that's where my confusion was then. Out of 1 and 3 then, would you say 1 is the best of what's left? What is the actual meat content in both?

Ohh dear, down to 40% is not good. Do you know what flavours they are? I also try to avoid fish-based foods, such as the Smilla Fish Pots, is this OK to do? She has about 12 tins of Salmon Bozita and I ordered 14 tetrapacks of Mackerel but have told the foster not to feed too often. I don't mind her getting fish, but I am concious of over-feeding it too.

If I remember rightly, it was the poultry pots that took the knock in terms of a reduction in declared meat content. But notice that I just harp on about declared meat content here. It could simply be that they aren't declaring the other types of meat that go into the food but I simply couldn't be bothered to talk to them and find out more when that happened. So, if you have a couple of spare minutes, you want to feed that food and are interested to know, you could always email Smilla (which are a zooplus own brand) to find out more. ;)

That's a good idea, I'll do just that :D I might also email Bozita too, get the low-down on their meat contents. That is, of course, if they actually answer the questions, as I do believe when you had that PDF up some weren't keen on replying? I'll give it a bash anyways, see how we get on.

I think you're original point is right though, as money's tight the main thing is that she's getting wet food and if it's cheap but average, it's better than cheap and sh!te. I can get her onto the super-duper-awesome stuff when I get a regular income :)

Hobbs, not to detract from the original question, but what jelly foods are good?

Moo Moo (the cat we may re-home re. other thread) only eats jelly foods, not pate. Oscar eats pate food with no issues, as I didn't think jelly was that great, but if that is what she likes I don't want to upset her until she settles...not that I want to upset her when she settles either, but I think you know what I mean :D

Any recommendations?

Hi RM :) Have you considered Butchers ? It's grain free in jelly and is VERY cheap (about ÂŁ2.50 for 6 tins) :)

Not the best food in the world but i think , far from being the worst :)

Yes Hobbs , Moo want's to know , what foods would you recommend ? :D Her favourite is anything in GRAVY :D but jelly is accepted too , although she doesn't clear her plate if it's jelly food :D

Pate food ...... unless it's sloppy like gourmet gold , she won't entertain it :mad2:

At least her fave is wet and not dry though :)

Hello :) Can you get it on Zooplus? I'm trying to to order from anywhere else as the food has to go over to Ireland, and delivery ends up costing a fortune :(

Going back to Smilla, the tuna is still 80% tuna, and the other fishy ones are just under 50% of tuna/meat I think, with most of the rest being stock (45% on one case), and 3% sunflower oil. So they haven't added anything bad, you just pay for water. But you aren't paying top dollar for it, and at least your cat is getting the liquid.

I haven't used the poultry ones so can't comment.
