Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Nellybelly I thank you but those breeds are not my favority as they are more girlish dogs.

Caroline I apoligise for not replying on the other thread but it turned into a unhelpful discussion and as such I have disregarded it.

Don`t want to even consider having the housekeeper take care of him or they will bond and not me!

Please keep posting your suggestions and any tips on feeding times and walking scheduales that fit with people that have jobs so that I can try not to have the dog walker have all the fun.

Thank You

ok, now I think you shouldnt get a dog. "Girlish dogs" is such a silly thing to say.
you are away 9 hours, not ideal to begin with. Even though you say you will arrange for someone to come in during that time.

And you also want a "manly" dog.
Dogs are not for show. What suits your lifestyle is a dog that has fairly low energy requirements...
Do you want the dog to keep you company, or to show off?

I really thought you were prepared to at least try make it work, but now I think completely different. A dog is no the pet for you.

So because people gave honest reply's you think it ok to disregard. Dogs are sociable animals, 9 hours is unfair, unless you are will to pay someone to come and look after the poor thing for a few hours.

It's not about letting a dog walker "have all the fun" It's about you meeting the dogs needs!!!

The dog for you would be Pluto, they sell them in all good disney stores :(

i think the other one was extremely helpful, having a puppy left alone is a really bad idea even if you`ll have a walker come a couple of times a day. that may all be fine once pup is trained but whilst toilet training etc they really need attention for most of the day. how long would you be able to take off work to train a pup? not only toilet training but pups get bored so easily and without company and distractions they WILL become destructive and regardless of breed will most likely bark and howl out of frustration

if you are working 9 hours then the dog walking will have most of the fun!

i would look into getting two retired greyhounds, they will be used to kennel life so an apartment all day shouldnt be too much of a problem, but would need to get some to let them out twice aday ideally and two of them to keep each other company.

why is it that you want a dog? you can get some cat breeds that are VERY dog like (main coons, persians, ragdolls, etc) although again would recomend two, but they'd use a litter tray so wouldnt need to get someone to come in.

or if you got a large cage you could get two ferrets

I work full time my partner doesnt.

I leave for work at 8.30am and he leaves at 9am, he doesnt get back til 3pm and i get back at 5pm.

Mine dont get walked during the day purely because my dog WILL NOT get out of bed until AT LEAST 2pm!

I have 1 lurchers and a greyhound two i rescued as adults and one i had form a pup. The OH was out of work at the time we got the pup and has only recently started work. It took a hell of alot of time and effort to house-train and get the dogs in to a schedule.

Because the OH was home all day until pup was about 1yr old they have a very strong bond (compaired to me and him) so if you are not the one who si caring for the pup during the day, the bond will not be as strong if you were there if you see what I mean?

Your best option is to TAKE TIME OFF WORK for a few months and take the time to know your pup and care for your pup. Then once the basic trainign is there then think of going back to work and egt a walker involved.

It is a hell of alot easier rescuing an adult dog who can deal with being left home then dealing with a pup who has seperation anxiety. As im sure your pup will get if he is left home alone all day.

I think you need to do more research.

You were given sound advice from experienced dog owners and trainers and it was 'unhelpful'?

I do apologise.........
it was unhelpful as that`s not what he wanted to hear, no offence but that`s just the way this is coming across
