Was in ASDA this morning...

Was doing my shopping in ASDA this morning....

The lady in front of me in the till queque, had lots of luxury goods ie. expensive sherry, sweets, best of human foods.

But then I saw her buy 3 bags of dry 'Smart price' Dog food (the cheapest of the cheap).

Couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor dog. Yes, its a recession but makes me sad when people still buy their '****' and 'booze' but feed their animals rubbish cheap food.

And yes there will be some that say..." Its the only dog food my dog will eat".
Or "Everything else gives my dog the runs".....

IMO excuses, to ease their conscious of their meanness.....

A couple of years back, I was out of work, and times were hard. I would buy the cheap food for myself or STARVE, but my cats still got their James Wellbeloved food and Catsan litter. Personally I woudn't touch the Smart price pet stuff with a barge pole....

I dont smoke and hardly drink, and dont buy all the luxury foods for me or the kids just normal supermarket brands.

I feed my sasha on whiskas and that is the only thing she will eat. A lot of people dont agree with that, but it isnt the cheapest by a long shot, it is expensive i think. :)

You dont have to justify what you spend or what you feed your pets. :D :) and supermarket brands are not always cheap, I agree

Reading through this I thought I would tott up what my two kittens cost me food wise per month.

So here goes

They eat Purely wet food, 2 1/2 pouches a day so for a week that is 18 pouches. Monthly it works out at ÂŁ23.34

Then they have Go-cat dry food down for munchies whilst I am at work and that is about ÂŁ4 a month.

Not to mention the treats which my OH insists they have to have I would say that is ÂŁ10 a month.

Blimey

Same here Kath! :D I have tried Jinks on other food but he just wont touch it but I do try to compensate by giving him some fresh meat and fish too- he loves sardines, tuna and mackeral , I think if your cat is happy and healthy it doesnt really matter what price it costs!

My sasha is the fussiest cat ever and i couldnt even give her fresh fish or meat as she would not go back to whiskas pouches, so unfortunately she has to stay on the pouches and go-cat bisuits. xx

Ah, yes that wee urban myth... The ingredients have stayed the same! They still manufacture in they same way the always have! So, has sister company RC.

I have posted a while back about this take over, and corrected a few urban myths on it! :D

I tried my lot on Applaws a short while back, but I am back with JWB! ;)
Well in all fairness I cannot really comment on the cat food has have no knowledge on this, but with regards to the dog food I believe the ingredients have been substituted for lower grades and many do report loosened bowel movements.

'All' pet food companies alter their ingredients from time to time, and this may happen!

The JWB website actually addresses such rumours! :D (Which are approx 5 years old).

More concerning is the number of parent(s) whilst on a budget purchase their alcohol & cigarettes, whilst the kids are fed cr*p. Not only is this bad for the health and wellbeing of their children but it also sets a terrible example as role models.

Moronic society is Britain, I really believe that a good 2/3 of the nation is comprised of simpletons.:eek:hmy:

My old boy would only ever eat 'cheap' dog food - we tried him on all sorts of more expensive brands over the years and he wasn't interested in it. We always went back to supermarket own brands with him, and he was a fantastically healthy dog (apart from being a bit overweight - but that's more to do with the leftovers of our food and other doggy treats he always managed to scrounge ) the vet was always very pleased with his overall health and he lived a very healthy 16 years :) it never did him any harm!

However - our dogs now are on Bakers (yes I know it's the devil's food and I wouldn't feed it to my own dogs but hey, the parents pay for it so I don't get a say ) and Tiger is absoloutely mental all the time, he is like a hyperactive child 24 hours a day. Although Ruby is very calm, but she's blind and probably quite old and she's never been a very active dog anyway. But I don't think that food helps Tiger one bit, he is like a little hurricane!!

Taken from the website:

James Wellbeloved
Based in the heart of Somerset, James Wellbeloved started with one simple aim - to produce a food that would help dogs that suffered from food allergies and digestive intolerance. These problems meant that many dogs suffered from loose digestion and skin irritations that made their lives a misery and was distressing for their owners. A list of ingredients that were thought most likely to cause digestive and skin upsets was set up. None of these ingredients were to be included in James Wellbeloved dog foods.

Since those early days James Wellbeloved has continued to develop. Our range has grown to include cat food, ferret food and dog treats. We are now one of the country's leading pet food producers but we have remained true to our heritage - we have not compromised our products and we are still based in the Somerset countryside.

James Wellbeloved only supply the specialists who can advise pet owners on the correct product for their pet's needs. There is continuous product development and an ongoing commitment to product quality.

Our foods have won numerous awards but more importantly provided naturally healthy, great tasting nutrition to thousands of pet owners in the UK.

I assume you've pointed out the link bakers and his hyperness to your parents and suggested something else? What did they say?

I know bakers is cheaper but if it calms him down anything for an easy life eh!

We feed our cats on "classic" that IS the only thing they'll eat plus it happens to be cheap. Dog is on different things at mo to see what he eatss. I don't smoke and i do drink at weekend but whats saying that, that dog doesn't only eat that type of food?

They said something to the effect of "well he's mad anyway so what does it matter what we feed him"

I wouldn't mind but there's probably much better dog foods out there for the same price, if not even cheaper than Bakers!! I think they only bought it in the first place because it was on offer, and just stuck with it. I remember someone saying on here that it was the equivalent of feeding a child on a diet of McDonalds every single day, and that's what I always think of when I see it. I hate feeding him that bloody stuff :( I might have a look into other foods and see if I can find something more healthy for the same price or less, but tbh I don't really know what to look for in a healthy food, cos obviously every brand out there claims to be good for your dog, so it's a bit of a minefield!

You're right it's tough finding a good food especially when your parents don't have much of an interest.

Why not email a couple of companies and ask for samples? JWB is great for it. They send you the samples, a leaflet on their foods and a guide to switching over to a new diet :)

i would NEVER buy asda price dog/cat food.
I buy my cats Royal Canin, Whiskas or Felix.
Cats are on Whiskas buiskets at the moment, and Felix wet food.
Kittens are on Go cat Kitten Busikets and Whiskas Kitten wet food.
