Test strips for cat urine sample

Hi, quick question, wondered if anyone could help?

Is it possible for human urine test strips to be used on a cat urine sample when checking for things like blood, protein, WBC's & glucose?

The sample would have been procured from non-absorbent litter and tested immediately.

Thank you for the replies. This is what I'm finding confusing, though.

2yrs ago my cat had a kidney infection and her only symptoms were weight loss and her coat was very dry and dandruffy. The urine samples I had done were all at the vets surgery.

I recently took her again with the exact same complaints, but as she had an empty bladder, no sample could be taken. Vet mentioned, though, that she showed a bit of discomfort over the kidneys. I therefore bought some of the non-absorbent litter and manged to get a sample this morning.

Now, I managed to get the urine into two test tubes and I tested one of the samples with my own urinalysis strips. It tested positive for a fairly high level of protein and WBC's.

Therefore I took the other sample down to the surgery this morning, got it tested but told that it all seemed fine except that the SG balance was off and it had crystals in it. I've subsequently learned (through other recent posts in another thread) that if a sample is over 30 mins old and put in the fridge (which this was) it can easily form crystals, which means the sample I took could be void.

However, the one I took with my own strips is bugging me. I wasn't able to speak to the vet and it was the receptionist who relayed the info. There was no mention of protein or WBC's. I have an appt booked tomorrow, but if she toilets prior to it then I won't be able to get a direct sample at the vets again.

So, a bit confusing

Thank you, Shoshannah.

Would you say it's a possibility that the sample I took to the vet was also a waste because I sat it in the fridge as I wasn't able to head off with it until about an hour or more after taking it?

There were crystals present and the SG was "off balance" bit no sign of anything else.

Struvite crystals will start to form in a sitting urine sample after 30 minutes; even more so in refrigerated samples.

I don't think it's possible to accurately interpret the significance of struvite crystalluria in a cold sample over a couple of hours old. But if they were able to rule out haematuria (blood in the urine), look for preliminary evidence of bacterial infection and find out what the SG was, I wouldn't call it wasted at all. :)

Do you have any further info on the SG?

Actually, no you're right about that. Wasn't sure if a cold sample affected anything else, too.

No, the receptionist just said, "Something about the SG balance being off, but I don't know what that means."

Would have been handy if she said it was or low. Her urine looked well concentrated.

I test my cats wee regularly to check for glucose/ketones & always use human ones, I get them from Amazon. I never realised the protein side of it was useless. His SG has changed in the last week to what it usually is, I'm taking him to the vets tomorrow for something else so will ask about that then.
