Hi all, I'm glad there is a forum for dog training and hope you guys can help,

I have a springer spaniel he's 9 months old and my problem is with his recall, he's not a working dog just a house pet,

When out on walks in fields he won't come back when I call him, it's if he's thinking I'll come back when I'm ready. Even when I have treats he turns his nose. He don't run off he's always close but he don't return when called, I've tried funny voices you name it I've tried it, in the house its a different story he comes every time he's called. I need some training advice please.

When he's out and about you're not as interesting as all the sights and smells out there. When he's at home, you're the most interesting thing around.

I'm working through the book "Total Recall" by Pippa Mattinson. Still a long way to go but it's really easy to follow and all makes sense - basically you build up their recall gradually, starting from "impossible to fail" eventually getting to "ignore distractions all around"

Your clever dog: Getting your dog to come when called
By Sarah Whitehead

Does your dog whizz back to you as soon as you call his name?

Can you call him to you even when there are other dogs or distractions? Teaching your dog to come to you when you call is the cornerstone of training and the gateway to allowing him more freedom in the park.

If your dog has selective deafness, ignores you in the garden or the park, or would rather play with other dogs than come when you call, this specially designed training session is for you.

Ideal for starting out with puppies or rehomed dogs, and also for dogs that ignore you or are slow to come when called, despite previous training.

Including:
• How to know what's rewarding for your dog and what's not
• Five times when you shouldn't call your dog!
• Using your voice to call versus using a whistle
• What to do if you call and your dog doesn't come to you
The pack contains: A clicker, long line (worth ÂŁ10), training manual, instructional DVD: 55 mins approx running time including Bonus trick, Bonus Training Session, Intro to Clicker Training, Q & A with Sarah

We did part one and two of Jane's recall workshop (the one mentioned above) last weekend, doing part three next weekend. Definitely recommend it!

^^^^ This.

30+ years ago when first learning to train my border collie the trainer told me I HAD to the most interesting thing in the area that the dog was free in otherwise she might not always respond. My current dog is coming up to 14 months old and this is how I taught him to recall - away from others dogs, people even if he's playing ball with someone. I use sillly voice - higher pitched, excited, I run around sometimes like a loon - dog thinks ohhh what's happening over there, think I'll find out. I don't just use recall for end of free running around - pop him on the lead for a couple of minutes and then let him go again so he doesn't think recalling means playtime is over. I also used a long line to help reinforce the recall when he was younger and sometimes, especially if we are going to somewhere we've never been to and I don't know the walk I'll pop him on it even now.
