Puppys umbilical cord ??

My dog is pregnant and is about to drop, ive been researching alot, everything on dog pregnancy's ever since i first had her stud, right from week 1 to week 9 of the pregnancy. The only thing i am a little confused about is the puppys umbilical cord.

I understand that my bitch would most likely take care of this and chew it her self, but on certain occasions if she is struggling i may have to but in and give her a helping hand.

Im fine with this and i've read the best way to do this is to tie two knots in the cord, 1 an inch away form the puppy and the other about 1/4 - 1/2 an inch away from the first knot and cut inbetween.

The only thing i havent been able to find any information on is what i do after i have cut the cord, it may sound a little silly, but do i then untie any of the knots i have left on two ends of the umbilical cord. or do i just untie the mother end or both. I just cant seem to find any information on this.

if anybody could help me this would be great.

Thanks

yes and what about the knot on the other end of the cord still attached to the mother??
Cut the knot? Using the method you've described, you wouldn't be cutting any knots.. and if you did tie two knots in the cord (and I'm not sure why you would lol) you would be discarding one of them wouldn't you. The knot stays in place and the 'stump' of umbilical cord will fall off.. taking the knot with it.

yeah i understand this, im not an irresponsible breeder, i have homes for all pupps once they are 8 weeks old.
Oh heck. The Shelters and pounds are full of unwanted Bull Breeds.

I do hope you can get good, permanent homes for these pups.

I wouldn't interfere with the umbilical cord at all unless absolutely necessary. I bred terriers and they know instinctively what to do. Leave Mum to it, but I would ask your vet exactly what to do with the cord, should the need arise.

thank you very much for your answer it was very helpfull! i plan on leaving it to the mother i want to leave as much to her as possible, but i just want to be ready just incase she struggles to do it adn i may need to give her a hand.

I didnt want to get to that situation and not be 100% sure on the proceedure or what to do.

once again thank you for your answer it was very imformative.

I would leave the tape tied where it is. The cord vessels will clamp together within a few hours, so there will be no bleeding, and the cord stump falls off after a few days. If mum wishes to chew the tape off let her, her teeth will crush the cord preventing bleeding, that's why it's best if she could do it herself in the first place.
