Hi

We got a Maine Coon male kitten 12 months ago. Fairly early on we found that he kept being sick. We put him on sensitive food and that seemed to cure it. We slowly reintroduced normal food and everything seemed fine. We thought that it was down to the fact that we were feeding him normal cat rations whne a maine coon requires a lot more. He was wolfing his food down and then throwing it up.

Several weeks ago, we noticed he wasn't himself and he had diarrhoea. He also seemed to have laboured breathing and muscle spasms. His coat had lost its fluffyness and his tail had thinned out to the point where it looked like a palm tree rather than a huge feather duster.

We took him straight to the emergency vet as at this point it was evident he was not well. We found that he had lost a fair bit of weight since his last check up 3 months before this visit. They took bloods and temperature.Temperature was fine and initial bloods were all clear. He was given some sort of vitamin paste that we fed him daily for a few days and we put him straight back onto the sensitive food.

Whilst waiting for the full test results to come back (approx a week) we monitored his poos which went from liquid to semi soft, His coat improved massively, his tail filled out again and his playfulness came back. When the results came back, we went back to the vets.

They took more bloods, urine sample, poop sample, a sample from the gut and gave him an ultrasound. They found that he had inflamed lymphnodes on the ultrasound but needed to wait for the test results before diagnosing.

Upon return, the only thing they found was 2 common viruses in his poop test. Even though his poops had become more solid, there were a couple of occasions where he had had diarrhoea and he had again lost weight again.

We gave it another week and again another weight loss.

This time they put him on antibiotics. We have almost completed the course and we have kept him in for a whole week now to eliminate the chance of it being related to something he has been eating outside.

He's seemed fine, he's had solid poos every day since being kept in on the drugs, he has been eating and drinking normally, he's been play-full and he has wanted attention etc. This morning he had his breakfast and 2 hours later, threw it up. He then threw up a yellow, foamy bile about 8 times over the course of the next hour.

He has now stopped being sick but is behaving like he is a bit sorry for himself. He doesn't want to be touched and hes just lying there.

Should I take him to the emergency vet now? Right now is a real problem for me and i don't want to go all the way down there for them to just tell me that we need to monitor it again. He is booked in to the normal vet on tuesday anyway.

Has anyone had a similar experience and found a solution?

Hello @will_curt and welcome :)

I'm sorry to hear about the problems with your cat. He sounds quite poorly, and for a cat to keep vomiting bile after he has already vomited the contents of his tummy is quite unusual, IME. I assume it is wet food he eats?

I would phone your vet for advice. I wouldn't leave your cat unwell as he is until tomorrow morning, and definitely not until Tuesday.

A couple of times in the past at a weekend one of my cats who has IBD could not even keep water down 6 hours or so after he had vomited the contents of his tummy. I could not leave him to become dehydrated so I took him to the emergency vet. They gave him an anti-sickness injection and some pain relief and I was glad he was able to eat a small meal of chicken when we got home, and keep it down.

You might need to look at changing his diet again. It could be one of the ingredients of the sensitive wet food he is not tolerating, e.g. chicken is a common allergen for many cats. Any dietary changes you make should be introduced slowly though. It took me months to find the right wet foods for my IBD cat. I can suggest some suitable foods for you to try for your cat, if you would like. :)

I hope he feels better soon.
