Hello Cat Mums and Dads..

My Siamese is recovering from Cholangiohepatitis..(My vet thinks he had the Cholangio part) hes had some blood works and his potassium levels are low..he is having Kaminox..but can anyone recommend any good foods to increase his potassium?
Would be really grateful for any advise!
Many thanks!

@Samantha Neville - has the vet said your cat's low potassium levels are related to the cholangiohepatitis he is recovering from? If so the levels will improve with the Kaminox potassium replacement supplement and stabilise. Levels will need checking regularly by the vet and adjusting as necessary, so your cat is not getting too much of the potassium supplement.

Foods high in potassium are the special dietary foods fed to cats who have chronic renal disease (CKD) and lose a lot of potassium in their urine. Unless your cat has kidney disease there is no need to feed him such foods. To do so, along with giving him the Kaminox, might make his potassium levels too high and cause Hyperkalemia, which could be dangerous for his health.

Foods for cats with kidney disease are also lower in protein than normal cat foods, another reason they are unsuitable for a cat who does not have kidney disease.

You may like to have a read of the explanation on Tanya's CRF website of potassium imbalances (and hypokalemia and hyperkalemia. )

Hi, has he been on a drip? This can cause low potassium in humans, my Mum had it, so she had to have potassium tablets for a while. It has now corrected itself though. I hope your cat can be given some supplements by the vet, and then start to get potassium through his food again. But as Chillminx said, too much can be dangerous, so the vet must keep a close eye on his levels with blood tests, until it is resolved.
