Joint supplement

I'd like to start Zak our retired racing greyhound on a joint supplement but looking online am overwhelmed by all the different sorts. He has a lump on his front ankle joint, the vet said it's an old injury. He doesn't look like he's in pain yet but we took him to town on a damp day last week and while we were standing waiting to be served in the pet shop he lifted his leg. I give him cod liver oil every day which has made his coat glossy, just wondering if anything would help as a preventative measure rather than wait until he's old and stiff. He's 4.

We use Ageility, I can't remember who it was recommended it but it was someone here. Before, I was using JointSure and I do think there was an improvement when I swapped. Both are Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements (like Yumove, but a bit cheaper).

I also have a Bioflow magnet on Timber's collar. I don't know whether it helps or not, but people who use the magnetic either say they don't notice the difference or that they are transformational. It can't do any harm, so ...

But please be careful with the cod liver oil. Over time it can build up an excess of vitamin A in his liver. Fish body oils as opposed to liver oils are a possible alternative.

My mums 12 yr old BC is on YuMove and Salmon Oil.

You can get standard YuMove at pet shops like Pets at Home, however, if they become less effective you can get stronger prescription ones from your vet. It really does help.

My mum also gets her BC a monthly Librella injection. Maybe too far ahead for you to be thinking right now but something to keep in mind. Her BC has arthritis in hips, elbows and knees, and this injection has set her back to acting like a puppy again and her movement has massively improved.

Goose is 6 and I’ve always had her on salmon oil as it’s not only good for the joints but good for the coat too. I use the YuMove Skin & Coat Care Itching due to her allergies as it helps soothe the skin, and previously I had her on the Pooch & Mutt salmon oil. Highly recommend either of these.

Have a look at Canine Arthritis Management website as they have a blog about supplements.

The only one with any evidence base is omega 3 which my boy has from salmon oil. We have found this along with Dorwest Herbs Moviwellia work for him as part of a multimodal approach to managing arthritis (we are already at that stage but you wouldn't know it seeing my boy).

I have also used Riaflex, jointsure and collagen based products in the past.

It is a minefield so do some research if you can and as always different things will work for different doggies.
