I have a problem - my cat wont even come home for another month but I already find myself ordering online crap for virtually no reason!

Here is an example of a "super useful" thing that I bought last night:

I haven't bought anything sensible like a proper scratching post or a litter tray yet - but she does have an Owl Bed and toy lion :p

I thought that buying the cat, feeding it and covering medical bills was going to be the main cost of pet ownership - I failed to account for how much my OH and I would enjoy scrolling through ebay and zooplus looking at toys :p

I would love to say that my (normally very sensible) OH will curb my enthusiasm but she is just as bad as I am :D I am going to have to take a night job at this rate :p

Meh we already moved house to ensure that we had a cat friendly landlord, if you are going to be that serious about getting a cat? You might aswell stock up on owl beds :D

The only thing I will add - as someone who did exactly what you're doing - Milo ignored almost all beds in favour of ours and the one on his cat tree lol

I can't look you in the eye and say that we are buying all of this stuff because we think the cat will love it. WE love the owl bed :p Frankly I suspect she will prefer this cardboard thingy that was really cheap:

I haven't got a tree yet, we decided that it may be best to wait until the kitten is a bit older rather than getting one right away

Smudge, having seen a photo of your (soon to be) little girl, I can understand totally why you are going shopping mad. Prior to Bertie arriving, all the local delivery drivers "knew" him because of the amount of packages that were being delivered - that hasn't changed and they all ask after him.

I can't quite see your poppet scaling a tree yet and I wouldn't buy anything too tall either, she doesn't look particularly athletic! It really depends whether you can buy a smallish one now with the thought that you may have to replace it in, say, six months time. Alternatively take advice from those on here who know about your kitten's breed and can advise whether you are better getting a medium sized one straight away. If you get one too tall for her safety, I can't see a way from stopping a kitten attempting to scale it. Anyway, I'm sure someone will be able to advise.

I haven't yet bought Bertie's tree - he had a scratching barrel / nest and I was waiting for the summer so that I could move the nest over to the patio doors and then get a tall tree to go in the sitting room. This is the one I love:

I'm just hoping that it will be strong enough for Bertie - it reaches the ceiling just about! He is growing rapidly and already more or less fills the top of his nest - I'm just hoping the baskets on that one will be strong enough. If not, I'll have to find a different one.

I have a Tigga Tower, so when bubs are in the house, I just take off the top posts/baskets, bring it down to about 50 CM, then let them go mad! Then when they're bigger, say 12-16 weeks depending on the cat, I slowly build the Tigga back up again, but I do loads of work with them to teach them to climb down rather than hurling themselves off the edge in the full expectation that someone/something soft will materialise magically below them to catch them.

@Temporally_Loopy I have (or I think that should be Arthur has!) the smaller version of the tree you posted, it's great! The base is really heavy so it's in no danger of being knocked over. The posts and baskets are really sturdy too, I was very pleased when it arrived! I got it before Arthur came home and I showed him how to get to the baskets via the sofa (the tree is right next to the sofa) with a wand toy. Now he is bigger his can climb up the post to lower basket and reach the other baskets from there. It's quite comical to see him climb up the post!

Thank you Lea - it's good to know that someone else has already tested one of these first. I know that it has some pretty good reviews on Zooplus and there are plenty of photos of them "in use" but that's not the same as being able to ask a question about it from "real" person. If that is Arthur in your profile photo then he is a real beauty, what breed is he? He certainly looks a sturdy boy!

I would rather have the smaller of the trees, like yours, but that wouldn't be much taller than his current barrel / scratcher / nest, whereas the larger one would more or less reach the ceiling. I just hope that as he gets bigger he won't think jumping off onto people is a fun occupation as he already weighs over 8lbs.

Thank you, yes that is Arthur. He's a BSH and at 4 and a half months old weighs 2.5kg, so I think he's going to be a big lad! I have the tree positioned away from human traffic so that isn't an option :) I think once Arthur has had full use of this one I will probably end up getting the bigger one.
