How to rehydrate safely? What is the best drink to do this?

Hello all, hope you and your families and your pets are all doing fine.

I haven't been well and now I am feeling slightly dehydrated :(
(tired, dry mouth and dizzy)

I have been having water but that is just making me feel sick so I wondered What is the best drink to have when rehydrating?
And, how best to drink it? - In other words, slowly (small regular sips) or fairly quickly?

Thank you for all answers.

Definitely slow, regular intake - quaffing a glass full will just result in an imminent trip to the loo!

I've heard a 50/50 mix of fruit juice and water can be useful, as it replaces electrolytes as well as moisture. It's better to avoid anything with caffeine in it, as it causes slightly more water to be lost from the body so you will rehydrate more slowly, but you won't lose more than you are taking in so you would still rehydrate. Sports drinks are another option, but avoid sugary stuff for the time being.

Hope you feel better soon!

If your like me and suffering a bug. I find that sometimes flat coke/ lemonade/ lucazade settles your stomach.

Not sure of the science behind it but it's something a lot of people do. Won't hydrate you but settle your stomach to allow to to take water/ squash.

Hope you feel better soon. I'm feeling rubbish, just got out of bed after being in it all day. :(

Non-diet coke, with a single teaspoon of sugar stirred in.
This is sort of what my mum was told to do when she was desperately sick from chemo.

Normal coke, very cold and allowed to go completely flat.

Dioralyte from the chemist is what they use to give out at the Dr's if the kids had been ill.
Exactly what I was going to say :yesnod:

God bless that stuff

In my fit and active days I'd take any excuse to have a bottle of Lucozade Sport. Don't know if it does any good but it was nice! Or plenty of sweet milky tea. Apparently when you're dehydrated you've also lost salt and minerals that the body eeds to reabsorb water effectively. Climbers always had a bag of crisps and a lot of water :)

Thank you everyone.

Think I'll try the half fruit juice and water tonight and I've added some coca cola to my shopping delivery for tomorrow.
Fingers crossed that will help.
DO try and get some Dioralyte (sp) though as PM suggested; when you dehydrate (and trust me, I'm an expert on dehydration ;) ) your electrolytes and bloods mess up which is why it makes you feel very unwell.

Water will help but copious amounts, before normal balance is restored, will dilute them further (mineral content in mineral water is minimal).

The cola will (hopefully) help with the nausea, but it wont help with the blood and salt rebalancing.

Dioralyte contains essential salts such as potassium, magnesium etc that will (with mild dehydration) re-balance the salts in your blood and make you feel a lot better.

Have you been eating?

Sorry if I'm making this too dramatic; I'm just used to the epic drama side of it  xx

 Aquarius works best for my kids..and myself..tastes better than dioralyte and does the same job..less sweet than Lucozade..if you not fan of very sweet drinks..and is not fizzy...the original flavour is the nicest...
Dioralyte tastes lovely!!! Or maybe I'm just used to it

Can we get Aquarius here though, babe?

Love ya xx

I spoke to a friend of mine earlier and she has very kindly said when she goes to the supermarket this evening she will buy me some rehydration sachets/drinks or tablets and bring them round tomorrow. I do know that the local supermarket sells those dioralyte blackcurrent flavoured drinks in individual cartons, she might get those.

If I still feel bad come monday I'll contact the GP.

Thank you all again.

Thank you Flamingoes.

I feel very tired today and generally unwell. I'm just focusing on taking sips of water regularly.
My friend brought these for me to put in the water, just hope its working: O.R.S Rehydration 12S - Groceries - Tesco Groceries

I'm also going to have coca cola as well, I'm hoping a mixture of this rehydration stuff and coca cola will do the trick.

How long does it normally take to feel 'better'?

I'm normally on a drip so it's a bit different as the idea of a drip is it gets into your blood much more quickly than taking something orally

If you don;t have a canular handy ( ) then hopefully it should only take a couple of days.

Can I ask what was wrong?

As a side note; do put it in the water but soluble solutions tend to lose their potency or dilute entirely after about 15 minutes xx

Thanks.

Apparently you can make up the solution and store it for use later (8 hours at room temperature and 24 hours in a fridge) so I guess it wouldn't loose it's potency, but I will keep that in mind :)

I'll PM you if that is OK?
