Hi, yesterday I brought a new dwarf hamster home. Im giving him about 4 days to settle in before I start the taming process. When I was giving him food yesterday (he was asleep and I tried not to wake him and I didn’t touch him or hand feed him) he made a strange noise which I think was hissing. It sounded a bit like a bee or wasp buzzing. I looked it up and it was screaming/hissing. What I would like to know is, will this impact him, I obviously frightened him, will this make it harder to tame him? Will he never become tame or just won’t like humans? I love mochi so much and I don’t want him to be terrified whenever humans come near him. What can I do to make him feel safer?

Yep, I am trying to limit when I go into the cage. I had to give him food and I made sure he was asleep but I think he was awake in his hideout or I woke him up and it scared him. He has settled in really well though, he is now completely happy to move around in the open in his cage when people are near. He has been at home for 2 days now. How long should I wait before I start taming him. His behaviour shows he is settled in but the hissing indicates he is just not used to humans. I could possible start by just putting my hand in with a seed and pitting it down so he gets use to my hand and my smell but not actually touching him.

I don't think there is a fixed rule of how long before you handle, I'd say give it a week or so but some more of the experienced members may weigh in on this and confirm or suggest a better timeline. I forgot when I started taming but I think mostly about a week or so into acquiring my hamster.
If your hammy is comfortable with it, I guess you can start with very short sessions?

I have started to tame my hamster now, I did some research and I watched a Victoria Raechel video and she said it’s good to wait 2-3 days. Now I have had him for over 3 days. Yesterday, I started by putting my hand in and letting him eat seeds off my hand. Today he he crawled onto my hand and is completely happy being held and likes to sit on my lap. He settled in very quickly and seems to be completely comfortable with being stroked and held. It is strange because I have only had him since Friday. But I guess he is just happy near humans. He only hisses if you wake him up which I try my best not to do. He hasn’t bitten me at all which is great.

Hello! I see another person has my same username lol!
Anyways I wouldn't say that scaring her would do too much for the process.
Sadly I have scared a bit with the littlest such as walking in the room.
But I had a different attempt of taming and it worked!
It isn't to hand feed her cause I did that once and she started trying to bite like an inch away! My way to do was to pet her frequently and give her some treats when she was out.

Haha there's two of you, it's so confusing! Yes hamsters may think you're food so they give it quick test (I mean how else can you know for sure it's not food!) just to make sure and normally won't draw blood :)
Its so great that Mochi (super cute name btw!) has settled in. My hamster is still not too keen on handling but accepts it as it meant snacks and exploring his hooman's very comfortable bed.
