Sorry if anyone has one- I don't mean to offend! It's just this is one of the breeds I was possibly thinking of getting and then today someone told me me they can be quite smelly.I'd no idea this was a " thing" with them any more so than any other dog but then I started googling and they're listed as one of the smelliest dogs. So, is this over exaggerated and if they do have a tendency to be a bit whiffy what things can you do to stop that happening.? I thought with regular grooming, making sure ears, mouth area etc are kept clean hopefully it shouldn't be a problem?

I’m sure there will be people who completely disagree, but in my very limited experience, yes they do have a very distinct smell, especially as they get older.
A family members show cocker who has since passed away from old age was very smelly in my opinion. They couldn’t smell it, but it was bad enough to make me feel sick every time I visited them. She was regularly groomed, but within a day or two, the smell was back.
A friends show cocker and my sisters neighbours show cocker both have exactly the same smell. Their ears and mouths are checked regularly and they are clean and very healthy. One is raw fed and the other is kibble fed, so I don’t believe it’s caused by their food.

I know quite a few working cockers and I have a springer and I don’t notice a smell from them.

This is just based on my experience of my mother in laws show cocker, but she is about 9 and she smells a lot. She’s a very affectionate dog, but I can’t stand to have her on my lap as the smell is STRONG.
I didn’t notice this smell when she was a puppy. And my mother in law doesn’t notice the smell at all.
I always thought it was made worse by the fact that they fed her bits of human food and her diet isn’t the greatest, but as nettles knows two with the same smell but fed differently, that’s prob not the case.

It seems, based on this then that there is something in what I've been told- seems to be something which becomes apparent when they are older. Does anyone know what causes it?

Mine is 13 months and does smell, mostly in the morning after lying in his bed all night. I thought it was just a dog thing rather than a cocker thing. I do have a very strong sense of smell though. We make sure the house is well aired, hoovered and all fabrics cleaned regularly so our house doesn't smell (confirmed by honest friends).
