Years ago I owned two Maine Coon girls, alongside my British. I know you can't really generalise as so much will come down to the individual cat's personality but judging by mine and those I've spent time with at breeder/friends... for me the main difference was activity levels - much higher in the MC's; a lot more athletic, able to easily get up to higher surfaces (and more likely to try even when it's impossible), more playful into their adulthood and they generally just thundered around a lot more.

I think I actually preferred their more laid back temperaments; yes, my British are laid back too... until, sometimes, you want to do something with them that they don't agree with. The MC girls also seemed to be more instantly accepting of visitors.

Having had my British for *such* a long time, I must admit that I'm probably somewhat conditioned to their quiet presence and would find other, more active breeds quite difficult to live with now.
