Any Flatcoat Retriever owners?

Since my Lab fell madly in love with a beautiful black Flatcoat girl at our local park, I've really started to like this breed. Met a few really sweet ones at Discover Dogs too.

Anyone feel like posting pics of their Flatcoats so I can get my fix for the day?:D

Also - how do you find them with regard to training etc? The one that my dog plays with is a real personality, but also very intelligent. (When I recall my dog, she now comes racing over to me and sits in front of me for treats!)

Thanks very much in advance for any pics and info :)

I think you've seen all my photographs of Rhuna, I can post them again if you're desperate ;)

I find Rhuna's character softer than the Labs, difficult to explain, Tau is very soft, Rhuna isn't as much of a mummy's girl, but she definitely has more of a desire to please than either of my Labs. Sometimes it takes a while for the penny to drop, but she gets there eventually.

I don't know where in the country you're based, but I'll let you know if/when I'm at any shows in the future, you're welcome to pop along and meet her ;)

Here's a link for you, look through the links on the left hand side :)

Ooh yes, please do let me know when you're at a show - that would be fab, thank you!

The pics of Rhuna are beautiful, she has such a sweet expression :)

Many thanks for the link :)

I think I know what you mean about the 'desire to please'. I only know one Flatcoat well, though I've met more, but the one I know is very 'biddable', if that makes sense? :)

To gatecrash the flattie fix:

Oh, your flatties are darling! The adults look so regal and the pups are just adorable.

I may be slightly guilty of having a flatcoat or 3 :D

Feel free to have a flatcoat fix here..

Oh, ***GORGEOUS***!!!

Are Brooke and Zanna liver-coloured? I've never met one in 'real life' so these pics are a treat, thank you very much!!

edited to add:

Thank you so much for the link, just been enjoying your wonderful photos!!

How do you find Flatcoats as a breed, out of interest? The ones I know are full of personality and real livewires! :)

Oh they are many things all rolled into one dog ;-)

They are intelligent, biddable and very eager to learn. They have one he'll of a nose on them and are air scenters, unlike your lab who is a ground scenter

They have a wicked sense of humour, and will play to an audience. They lick. Don't get a flat if you don't like kisses, it is controllable but they still like to do it. They also mouth andmany will hold your arm/ clothing . They are easily bored, and like company. They need adequate exercise as adults and to free run , mental stimulation is an absolute must.

They are goofballs, they can be so elegant, they will do anything to please, and anything they find pleasing. Slow to mature mentally and physically .

All that said, mine get an hours exercise off lead daily, they also get training most days. They sleep most of the remaining time : lol: As with any dog, you get back what you put in. More akin with my border collies than my Labrador in energy but less impulsive behaviours ! My lab was a fairly lazy lump though!

Not sure where you are located, but you are welcome to meet my girls :) they welcome visitors ;-)

They sound just like the Flatcoat beauty that my dog adores; the dogs are best mates and a sheer joy to watch together :)

Thank you sooo much for your kind offer! I am in north west London but if I'm ever due to visit your neck of the woods I would LOVELOVELOVE to meet your girls, they are so gorgeous :)

I agree with your specific choice of word by the way, I too always think how 'elegant' my Lab's Flattie girlfriend is!

LOL - just re-read your comments and am laughing to myself, recalling the time Dex's Flattie friend decided she liked my coat so much, she just had to hang on to the sleeve with her mouth! On and off for almost two hours :D

Is he castrated? This can change things. If not, I wouldn't yet :) he sure had a lot of bone as a puppy so I doubt very much he in any way was a small pup. They really do go through a leggy stage, and Zan has just started to grow into her head at 18 months.

Not sure on males but my girl changed shape right up to the age of 3, then changed again after a litter , so he has a long way to go yet, not in height but definitely in body :)

Lines are different on maturing age and overall shape, so his pedigree will play a part :)

Thanks for the info. In response, he is not neutered and I probably will not have him "done" unless he develops any behavioural traits that would warrant it. I saw his mother, auntie and grandad with the breeder, and photos of his dad. They seemed much bigger than my dog, but he isn't a year old yet so perhaps I am being a bit unfair on him. Before I bought him I was told that flatcoats from Swedish bloodlines are bigger than British bloodlines but as a downside they are more highly strung.Don't claim to know much about this or whether it is true though except when we were on holiday in Devon we met a beautiful black flattie who made my Golden Retriever look small. He was gorgeous. My 11 month old flattie is about the same height as my 19 month old Golden, 23" to the withers but much finer boned with a much narrower skull, he weighs 27 kg. All I can think is that the one I saw on hols was exceptionally large and probably from Sewdish bloodlines.
Talking of changing body shapes with passing time I'm afarid to say that my own body shape has changed over the years and certainly not for the better:(

quiddelbach do u breed flatties? puppy pics are a must please :)

skye is small for the breed. when people who know flatties see her, they usually comment on how petite she is. shes perfectly in proportion though!! hehe.

she weighs around the 24-25kg mark. her sire was huuuuuge.

Hi Tashi, how old is Chase? Mario has the same typical very distinctive headshape but as yet has far less feathering to the back of his forelegs and underbelly, he seems similar in build to Chase but is far more leggy at the moment and though "just" a pet would make an excellent working dog as he lives to retrieve especially from water. What he still has at the moment (which I can't see on Chase) is quite a prominent occipital ridge which I believe is a breed fault? My GR was the same but it became less obvious as he muscled up a bit as he got older. Not sure how far you have to go back in the pedigree to state a bloodline but the name Riversflight is well represented on his pedogree certificate if that means anything to you Tashi?

He is not fully done yet. He will grow, he will get muscle and his coat will come on, honest ;)

Yes, I do breed, but only for myself. No more litters here for 3 years or so :)

That first link on page one is to my photobucket page, you can see both my litters from Brooke on there, and Brooke from puppy on.

Zanna is Brooke's daughter from her first litter, and I have just kept Bess from her second and last litter.

Zanna's sire is Achilty Red Cascade and Bess's is Gowran Indigo Extra. Personally I stick to English lines, and predominantly working. I will show Bess as a puppy but once we get training seriously all my available money and time will go to that.

Brooke has been out picking up this Jan, her puppies were 11 weeks and she is as fit as a fiddle, just a little out of coat.

Riversflight is a well known dual purpose line, Chase is now 3 but was about 2 when that photo was taken, Chase is also from dual purpose lines but is not worked due to time factors (her owner owns a beef and sheep farm) I only handle her, our main breed here is the goldens.
