Its interesting, any idea how they made their decision on the lists??

I wonder why golden retrievers are meant to be more intelligent than labrador retrievers, any idea guys??

I think re the dangerous list, any dog can fit into that category depending who has owned it!! I was surprised poodles came out above retrievers in the intelligence stakes, not that they aren't clever I just thought some other dogs were a bit more clever :)

Just to say - I didn't do this list !! before anyone jumps on me, lol just what I've found online and thought it'd be interesting to see peoples opinions :p

It seems to have been done by the dogs history/breed/obedience levels etc. Not quite sure though.

I disagree with the dangerous dog list.

The intelligence list I can only comment on my own breed (german shepherd). Sky is very quick to learn however my mastiff pup is almost as fast so I wouldn't place her in the least intelligent.

It all comes down to the individual dog :thumbup1:

I know. I've seen the list before.

At a guess I'd say someone has confused 'intelligence' with 'trainability' which is a huge (and unsupportable) assumption.

The 'dangerous' part is just someone's fantasy without any substantive justification at all and serves to perpetuate false and damaging stereotypes.

Well I would disagree with basset hounds being the least intelligent - i've had a few friends who have had them, and they are highly intelligent. I would also add setters to the intelligent list. I'm sure everyone who owns one of those dogs on the least intelligent list would disagree and those whose dogs don't appear would too.

There's also the complication that these lists aren't compiled in the UK. I guess the 'cleverest' and 'least-trainable' lists apply across breeds everywhere, but you can't take the 'dangerous' ones seriously, as some breeds are rare in this country. Also, in different countries, breeds are bred to be more - or less - aggressive than in others.

Temperament varies widely between countries and even certain families or strains of breeding (which may or may not be more popular in one country than another).

The guy who originally complied the 'smartest' list (Dr Stanley Coren) admitted in his other books that the Dobermann in Europe was bred to have more 'fire' in its temperament than those bred in the USA. How true this is, I don't know, but as different countries have different populations of various breeds, not to mention different laws about 'dangerous' dogs, these lists can't really be taken seriously to be a definitive world guide. As far as I know, there has never been a Top 10 of Most Dangerous Breeds done in the UK.... and if it was, I think our statistics would be quite different.

Edited to add: I recently saw a list of the most 'dangerous' breeds where it put the Australian Cattle Dog at about no.4. Now.... with very few of those being registered in the UK each year (rare breed here!), that either means they are incredibly savage (not) or the survey was done in a country where they are a lot more popular.

Best to take all these Lists with a pinch of salt & common sense :)

I think the idea of the lists is that they're about the average dog rather than a cumulative. So the amount of dogs in a country shouldn't affect the outcome (except of course there should be no pitbulls in the list at all in a UK list since they're illegal here.

As I said before - very very few Australian Cattle dogs either.... NONE of these lists have been complied for UK dogs. So we can't rely on the population stats from other countries, can we?

I think M-M is assuming that the placing might be influenced by the numbers of attacks attributed to each breed - in which case the population must also be known to determine the 'average' risk.

Since our data on the first is shaky and, on the second, non-existent if the list is compiled on such criteria it becomes even more ludicrous and (edit to acknowledge M-M point) even if the data were known for one location it could not reliably be used to predict trends in another location as breed characteristics vary according to differing breeding selection choices.

I saw this list in a book I got from the library. How to make your dog a genius or something like that. I think they work out intellience on how quick they are to do certain tasks. It has these tasks in the book so you can test your dogs IQ. They were things like, put a towel over your dogs head. How quick does it get the towel off or does it leave it there?:D

HaHa. It might as well have said that, it doesn't mean a dog is intelligent or not, I think it just shows what a dog will do for its human;) Great pic.

What about the Airedale ??and the JRT ( not a pedigree but hey !!! ) I may be bias but My Airedale is clever and easy to train the JRT'S well just look at a few movies that have a dog in it ???? lots of clever JRT'S there.

No honestly I do agree that some breeds are more inteligent than others some more stupid or shall we say layed back and of course some dogs are quicker to show their teeth but I dont totaly agree with the list.
