I've had a rat infestation in my shed. Piles of poo and they chewed up the wires on my freezer. I had no option but to leave poison down (after no joy with traps) which is all in the housed in special containers etc.

I found a dismembered mouse outside this morning and called the vets because I suspect Ziggy found it dead or dying. He's there now having blood tests and his stomach pumped. I feel bloody awful and am worried. They said to phone between 11.30 and 12.00 if I hadn't heard anything.

Oh poor Ziggy! :( Luckily you acted quickly LB so he should be fine:)

Rat poisons usually contain an anticoagulant (such as Warfarin) which as you say can be dangerous to cats (as well as wildlife including owls) if they eat a rodent that has been poisoned. :( Also poison causes a slow painful death for the rat.

It is really best to use an alternative to poison, for the sake of wildlife as well as pets. Even the classic snap traps which kill rats instantly are more humane. Here are some suggestions of alternatives to poison, including a PETA recipe for making a rodent repellent that can be sprayed onto wires etc.

Sending lots of good vibes for lovely Ziggy:)

I use an ultrasound plug in that works against mice, rats and rampant insects depending on the frequency. I bought it on eBay.
