Phonetically both spellings are correct for each accent. We don't pronounce 'Mum' as Mom, in our language it's 'Mum' As we seeing it how we say it, and vice versa :D

I have always said Mom or Mommy when I was a child, so did my Mom and her Mom.

A mummy is something they dig up in Egypt.
