Why are female dogs refered to as Bitches?
i think that word is such a strong word! I would prefer to call one a female!
I don't like the word Bitch as sounds so impersonal!
    Am i the only one?

I think the name bitch for a dog, came before bitch as an insult.

A female horse is a mare, but as we dont use mare as an insult, we dont think twice about it.

Its just the context in which it is used now.

Then its more of a joke rather than an expletive :)

I wouldnt take offence at being called a mare, but i may at being called a bitch.

Referring a dog as a bitch came before it was an insult

Hehe, thought this a chance to quote something if you're ever called a bitch...

    Say:

You just called me a bitch, thanks for the compliment.
A bitch is a female dog,
    A dog barks,
    Bark is on trees,
    Trees are part of nature,
    And nature is beautiful.

    THANK YOU!

I hate the word bitch i never call our girly that and i do think because its used as an insult to a female (human) that, that is the reason.

    Taken from wiki:
The term "bitch" comes from the 1150 word bicche, which was developed from the Old English word bicce. It also may have been derived from the Old Icelandic work bikkja for "female dog." As a derogatory term for women, it has been in use since the fourteenth century...:)

    Oh & i don't have a problem calling my bitch a bitch...:D

I always called Rosie my girl! Or when we did have Basil he was my boy!
I just can't call a female by that name!
    It sounds so inhumane!
I know that it is called that! But it feels so wrong!
I just could never say that word!

I don't see a problem with calling a female dog a bitch, she is a bitch.
You are not saying you effing bitch to her, just refering to her by the natural name for her sex. She won't mind ;)
I think, in a way it is similar to people not liking the 'real' terms for body parts, such as penis and vagina. There is some sort of humour or stigma attached to the name, when really it is just what it is called :)

But, of course, you don't need to call her a bitch, she is your girl and that is ok :)

*Also, just to add as an example, people are happy to call their female cats by the term Queen most likely because it is a nice name. Whereas bitch isn't. But they are just the terms used. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have no problem with anyone asking if Amber is a bitch or a dog, but I always answer she a girl.
