Hi, a friend has said she's getting a puppy soon at 12 weeks as she's going on holiday and the breeders are keeping the ouuoy am extra month whilst she is away. Do you think that's too long? I think a good time would be 8-10 weeks but I was just wondering if the 'critical' time to start training and socialising would be at 10-12 weeks. Would she still be able to house train and gain the puppys trust after 12 weeks? What is your opinion? Thanks.

Usual age is around 8 weeks, but for some breeds they dont leave to 10 or even 12 weeks anyway. As long as the breeders doing all that should be done habituation and socialisation and training wise revelvant to age it shouldnt really be a problem.

If its a 'toy' breed then the best time is 12 weeks due to the fact the smaller breeds take a bit longer to be ok without mum. I had a similar thread last week which has a link explaining why.

I've house trained and gained the trust of 2 dogs much older than 12 weeks, Spen was 9 months and Rupert at least a year old. Wolf didn't come home until 12 weeks and we never had any issues stemming from him being with mum that long.
