I always used to handle the babies by day 2 after they were born with the fancies and still do with the pouched rats.

As already said take mum out and put in seperate container then smother your hands in litter before taking the babies out. I always used to keep abit of the old bedding to mix with the new in the nest. Once cage is clean place babies in nest first then return mum.

    Hope this helps:)

Yes you shouldn't touch baby hamsters until they are fully furred and leaving the nest on their own. Everything else sounds about right though :)

I miss my hammies! I used to love breeding them especially when they are sooo tiny!

The babies should be fully furred, eyes open and leaving the nest independantly, even then you need to rub your hands in the bedding before touching the babies and not in sight of mum. Cleaning the cage might have to wait though and when you do you might have to replace the nest in the clean cage. It would be heartbreaking to get them this far just to loose them, I remember the smell from Spikes litter pretty bad isnt it.
