The nearest thing I have to a 'long line',is a flexi lead. But the way some people talk about 'longlines' they are very long!
Are they something you can buy,or something that you make?
I have visions of my dog tying himself in knots

A flexi lead is nothing like a long line. A long line is basically a very long lead. They can be bought from most pet shops and online.

The point is you can drop them- so technically your dog is off lead, but if they are being a bit dodgey with their recall you can stand on the line and thus get hold of them whilst you are 10/20/50m away.

I have 2 long lines, but it does depend on how fast your dog can move and how agile you are yourself. My boy is like the wind,so I dont think Id manage to jump on the line fast enough. :rolleyes5: But at least he gets a good run around with the long training lead and its helpful for training his recall.

Mine is too! Lol but with him he likes to chase a ball so as long as he is focused on that all good. If the nose goes down and tail up and he goes into tracking mode then the line is jumped on LOL!

Slight downside- soggy wet long lies are no fun at all!

Oh I know the feeling with a 30 foot long line all muddy/pooey and generally yuk! I end up with muddy jeans, gloves and jacket. That why I have two, so I can wash one and have another ready for use.

I have a 50ft long line but I tie a loop knot so far along in two different places to form 'handles' just in case I need it shorter
