We rarely think about dogs/cats who lose an owner but it must be so confusing when the hand that fed you and stroked you from when you were a pup or kitten isnt there any more

Hi Colliebarmy, I was just thinking the same in the week. I think a dumped cat I took on, may have been grieving for either a previous owner or a previous animal companion she once had.

I see it all the time at the re-homing centre where I volunteer - the cats who have lost their owners due to illness or death all have the same look on their faces, when someone approaches their pen - they look up briefly, see it's not "their" human and hunker down again. It usually takes quite a while to get them interested in life again:(

My mum adopted an older cat, Cleo estimated aged 12, in September last year. (I think she's older). Her elderly owner had passed away, and was undiscovered for days. When we went to the centre, Cleo was laid at the back of her pen, very shy, and looked extremely sad. She was very thin and just looked like she'd just lost her entire world, you could almost "feel" the sadness.
Mum and Cleo are now two little old ladies together.

we do the best we can with extra cuddles and treats - but until they find their new 'forever' human that's all we can do. I sometimes go home wishing I could take them all with me !

Well done Bertie’sMum. I read something wonderful yesterday written by a cat rescue centre: we may not be able to change the world completely but we can change the world completely for a cat / cats. Something like that.

I pray you'll be our eyes
And watch us where we go
And help us to be wise
In times when we don't know
    Let this be our prayer
    As we go our way
    Lead us to a place
    Guide us with your Grace
To a place where we'll be safe

This sounds so sad. There's an advert on TV about Dogs Trust, the dogs have a doll that resembles their previous owners and their new owners look like their dolls too. So very sad.
