My friend and gardener Karen left the UK to go and live in Turkey 15 months ago. She used to come to ours once a week to garden and would always pop in and see the HBs. She also used to cat sit on occasion too and the kids all adored her. She has known Huck and Holly all their lives (they are 9 and 8) and left the UK when Grace was 2 and Little H just under 1.

She has come back to England for the summer to work and popped over to see us all this morning.

I was very interested to see how the HBs would react having not seen her in so long. Living in a different country with different smells, using different bath products and owning lots of new animals inc a dog, changing her hair colour too I wondered if they would still recognise Aunty Karen.

I was pretty sure Huck and Holly would and I suspected Grace too but was very unsure about Little H.

He is quite wary of strangers and will tend to sit on the stairs and watch for 20/30 mins before deciding IF he wants to say hello or not.

Karen came in and he was on the stairs. Within a minute he went up to her and sniffed her with his tail in the air, then he rubbed up against her and flopped on the floor in front of her. It was amazing to watch. I have no doubt he recognised her immediately!

All the others did too of course and Grace was especially pleased to see her which was lovely. But Little H's reaction took me completely by surprise. Cats definitely do not forget and they also remember stuff from when they were very young too - he was still a kitten really when she left.

    She was thrilled!!

Cinders remembered me after my last term of uni (when I sent her home to live with Mum as I went back into halls) she was 2 by then but it was only for about 10 weeks - knew she wouldn't forget. But 15 months was longer than Little H had actually known Karen so it came as a complete surprise!!
