time is running out - and this law WILL affect people, some quite adversely I would imagine - I don't know how many of you, if any, are aware of this? I certainly wasn't.

Under the new law, to 'license' a herb to retain it in the consumer market will cost around £80K per herb - well outside the financial resources of many of the companies producing these products

Please take a look if you haven't already done so at this petition - I really believe this could make life difficult (and possibly painful for quite a lot of people

Some products will start to disappear from shelves as stocks run out unless this stupid directive is stopped

Stop the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive Petition

Seems that all those things which have been doing so much good for thousands of years in some cases are no longer good for us. Utter rubbish.

Thanks so much for putting this on the forum and bringing it to our attention. I've signed it and my OH. Have also copied to my Facebook page as lots of my friends use herbal medicine professionally and personally. Hopefully it will be signed by lots of people. The EU can be very misguided at times.:

Thanks to everyone who has signed - for those that haven't - PLEASE take a look, this seems pretty much destined to affect everyone whether it be directly or indirectly.

You will no longer be able to go into health food stores or chemists and buy some of the pots and potions you may rely on to keep you in tip top health - those that you can buy are likely to rise considerably costwise to help recoup of the £80K licensing fee per product.

Even simple things such as peppermint product used for IBS sufferers will no longer be available to purchase!!!

I've signed - wasn't aware of a petition before though I was aware of what was going on, having previously worked in a health food/herbal remedy shop. Even if the petition fails, there is nothing to stop any of us growing the plants and making the infusions or decoctions ourselves, without the industrial processing that can render some less effective.

    Thanks everyone :)

I was talking with my friend about the intended plans from this - she is of a strong opinion that the industry needs better regulation.

While in principle I don't disagree with this - this act goes much further and will stop it being viable for some of these products to be brought to the consumer market at an affordable price :(

This will undoubtedly lead to one of a number of things happening

    a) People's health suffering
    b) People taking more synthetic medications
    c) Buying from dubious overseas suppliers
    d) Growing their own

None of the above are, IMO acceptable - and if the last two happen - that could also lead to issues with people's health and pose far more risk than what we have at the moment :(
