Hi! Just got a 9 week old cocker spaniel called Alvin. Had him for two weeks now. Sort of getting the hang of toilet training. We leave the door open so he can go outside when he wants but sometimes he will go out and then come back in and do something extra on the carpet! Any tips and suggestions... first time puppy owners so learning as we go... Ste x

He won't know why you leave the door open yet you may have to go out and stand with him to get him to go outside. Then lots of praise when he does.

You need to train your puppy, you cant expect him to know where is and where isnt acceptable to toilet.

Ideally you need to keep the back door close, so there is some discernable difference betwen indoors and out. You should be physically taking him out every 20 mins, after play, after feeding and upon waking. You should stay outside with him until he goes, and praise him when he does.

Any accidents indoors should be cleaned with biological washing powder, and you should never punish a dog for going in the wrong place, but just praise when they go in the right one.
