The Zulus had already taken out the main army at Ishandlwana (?). They were excellent warriors and the soldiers at Rourke's Drift did well to survive. If the Zulus hadn't admired the fact that they put up such a good fight nothing would have stopped them taking them out.

Some of the Indunas (Generals) were executed on their return to the kings kraal..The king Cetewayo had forbidden them to attack a fortified British position...which they did.He was no fool.

At Ishandlwana Boer scouts had advised they laager (circle wagons etc.) for the night.General Chelmsford ignored the advice as he had intelligence that the Zulu Impis were over fifty miles away.
They arrived on the run at dawn and attacked in thick mist, many soldiers were killed while still in their tents.Over a thousand British soldiers and native levvies were killed. The greatest slaughter of a modern army by native warriors in history...even eclipsing Custers last stand.
Chelmsford should have been severely punished for his stupid actions but he had powerful friends back home and nothing was done despite the press being after his blood.
