Early this afternoon I saw that both my gerbils had blood on them, Storm looked worse and to start with I thought Storm had an abscess or something and maybe the blood on Ash was from Storm.

Got an appointment for them with a small animal vet this afternoon, the long and short of it is that they have had a fight, he reckons they had been at it all day and they were exhausted, they both have injuries, Ash has bites on his side and Storm has had fur pulled out :(

He gave them two injections, one for pain and one antibiotic, starting tomorrow I have to give them antibiotics twice a day for the next 5 days then he wants to see them again to make sure everything is healing well.

Thankfully the wounds aren't fatal but he said they could go into shock and they might die from that so the next 24 hours are critical, if they are still alive by Sunday morning hopefully that'll mean they will make it.

I feel confident that Ash will be OK but I'm worried about Storm.

They are now in separate cages and will have to stay like that as sadly they can not be put together again.

All my boys seem to want to turn my hair grey at the moment.

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that! Fingers crossed that they are both ok and recover quickly. I think you’re doing the best to separate them. We had rabbits when I was younger and we got a bonded pair, they lived together fine for a while but then had a fight and couldn’t live together anymore. One of them was fine with other rabbits but the other just wouldn’t take to any other in its space! It’s not nice when they’re social animals but it’s for the best sometimes x

Thank you. Yes it's not nice, but as you say it's for the best.

I was amazed when I was told they'd fought, they have lived together 2 and a half years. Not only that but there was no noise, I've heard that gerbils are noisy fighters, yet not a single squeak. o_O

Oh dear @ForestWomble - i have been having a bit of bother recently trying to find a pal for my recently bereaved and lonely guinea pig.

Unfortunately the first date didnt go well and she has a ripped ear:(

Away to the piggy rescue tom for some piggy speed dating. Fingers crossed.

I hope your gerbils both pull through. I havent kept gerbils since i was a teenager but they are lovely:)

Oh dear, that must have been upsetting to find them like that.

Hope they both recover from the whole ordeal.

I’m sure they’ll be happy enough in separate cages.

I'm so sorry ForestWomble - what a shock and you must be so worried :(

I have heard that in older ages illness can cause a declan, but I'm sure the vet would have noticed if they were ill when you took them so it's unlikely. It's more uncommon when they're older too, but these things do happen unfortunately.

Fingers crossed that your little gerbils will pull through x

Oh no I am so sorry to be reading this @ForestWomble

Such a shame and I can't believe you have had them for over 2 years now.

Fingers and paws crossed here for Storm

    Thank you

    Thank you.

Unless something is wrong that isn't noticeable yet they are not ill, as you say even if I hadn't noticed, I'm sure the vet would of done, its a mystery.

    Thank you.

I am delighted (and to be completely honest, surprised) to be able to say I still have two gerbils, they both made it through the night. :Woot
I was confident that Ash would be OK, he looked the least bad of the two and he was moving around yesterday evening and drank and ate, but I was more concerned for Storm, it doesn't look like he has eaten, and I'm guessing probably hasn't drunk either, in fact I don't think he has moved much since he got home yesterday, so I am still very worried that I will loose him, but the fact he made it through the night is massive, so there is hope.

Fingers crossed they’ll both be fine, it’s great that Ash has ate and drank x

    Thank you both.

Ash is looking worse than he did yesterday right now, he's gone into his coconut and is just staying in there, but I guess the painkiller he was given must of worn off by now.
    Still no sign of Storm.

I’m so sorry and happy they both made it through the night.
Such a shame they have been silly boys and can no longer live together.

We had 2 when my boys were young. They’re my favourite rodent pets and gave me hours of entertainment.
I had no idea they fight although I think we had 2 girls.

Everything crossed they continue to heal

Just seen this! What a worry for you!

Glad they made it through the night, but sorry Ash seems to have gone downhill slightly.

    Any update on Storm?

    Keeping fingers crossed.
